Derogatory and slang words

‘Yaar’ is widely used for friend and companion in Persian. In our text books Hazrat Abu Bakar is referred as Yaar e Ghaar (being companion of the Prophet in cave of Saur on their way from Makkah to Medina).

This word ‘Yaar’ has become derogatory and was considered very bad if used by a person from different gender for a person from other gender. Now I see young girls referring their male class fellows / colleagues again with this word ‘yaar’

How do you see this changing status of words? Share some other words, which become derogatory in different contexts or when translated in different languages?

Re: Derogatory and slang words

Apart from some scenes in Indian movies of the 80s and 90s I have never heard anyone use the word 'Yaar' in a derogatory manner.

Re: Derogatory and slang words

I think girls were taught not to call their female friends as yaar in many families back in 90s

Re: Derogatory and slang words

Another word that become derogatory is 'Bachi'.

Re: Derogatory and slang words

I don't see anything wrong with yaar word,If you are using it for friends, not for strangers thou.

Bachi means small little girls,no?

Re: Derogatory and slang words

Now the situation with yaar is changed, but still there are people who avoid using this for people from different genders.

Bachi is not just small little girl. In Karachi uski bachi is taken as = uski girl friend

Re: Derogatory and slang words

yaar is commonly used among friends in marathi language

Re: Derogatory and slang words

But no one would like to say by referring a guy ke 'ye meri...... ka yaar hai'. No?

Re: Derogatory and slang words

:D

Re: Derogatory and slang words

hence proved yaar is still a derogatory word :D

Re: Derogatory and slang words

this word is perfectly fine in our culture if used for close/fast friends of the same gender. however, using this term for opposite gender is considered indecent. Also, usage of this word by females in our culture is considered obscene it may NOT be so in present time in upper middle or upper classes of our society. in rural India, however, it's considered very bad.

btw, using the word 'yaar' for other than close friends is NOT considered derogatory but rather 'disrespectul and NOT desirable'.

Re: Derogatory and slang words

Exactly. Its about use for different genders that makes this word derogatory. Otherwise, Sufi poets also referred to God as 'Yaar' like 'Yaar ko hum ne ja baja dekha'

Re: Derogatory and slang words

i wouldn't say it's derogatory, rather "disrespectful' would suffice...i believe!

lafz e "Derogatory" se dussre bande kii qasdan 'hatak izzat' maqsood hotii hai jab k lafz e "disrespectful" se kahne waale bande kii sahvan laa-ilmii aur kam fehmii zaahir kartii hai.

Re: Derogatory and slang words

Yaar is commonly used by us I use with all my friends (boys and gals) some gals mind it some not
