Re: Democracy in Pakistan! Yes! Kenyan style
Aalsi, 1) was done through the parliaments approval legally, even Benazir supported him, since Article 52-B was introduced by Zia in the cosnt. to keep a check on the PM, and we all know what a farce it was. 1) was a GREAT move, sadly Musharraf put it back into place, because hes following the footsteps of Zia.
3) Atleast it had the parliaments approval unlike 'someone's favourite method of passing bills'.
So basically, you are saying that NS through a thoroughly rigged and discredited election of 1997, which PPP largly boycotted and which had the lowest turnout in history of Pakistan, NS obtained an artificial majority which he used to remove all the constitutional checks and balances on his power. That made NS the most dictatorial leader todate, and that is why all the political parties united against NS and wlecomed his overthrow by the great President Musharaf in 1999.
President Musharaf restored all the checks and balances which NS had removed, and gave elected memebers of Parliament to freely voice their opinions again. This was all validated by over 2/3 majority of the elected parliament under the 17th Amendment.
Also, let us not forget the last parliament was the first in the history of Pakistan complete its full 5 year term, and the participation of many all political parties - both pro govt and in the opposition.
