Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

So we’ve become used to absorbing absurdities in bulk every day being politically troubled Pakistanis. But some of those absurdities beat your comprehension more than the rest and demand being put in he annual hall of fame; which by the way shall well be one of the most interesting in decades, perhaps the world over?

In the morning I was advised to catch what gems the news channels were making the awakened Pakistani masses eager to decide their fate aware of today. I managed to catch the 1100PST news on Geo and was assured my imagination was still not as advanced to keep pace with the twisting faces of Pakistani politics, or is it the twisted minds of Pakistani politicians…?

The BB being in the news again;
Declaring a Deal on power sharing. But not with the present set up ala COAS President Gen Pervez Musharraf, but the ultimate Sharif, Mian Nawaz!

Benazir Bhutto claims to have secured a “verbal” agreement from her principal rival for the prime ministership of Pakistan to a power-sharing arrangement that would see her have first crack at running the country for five years.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Mrs Bhutto said that she and Nawaz Sharif, the exiled leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), had struck the bargain so that they could present a common front in their battle to reassert civilian control over the army.
Any such arrangement would go far beyond the published terms of the Charter of Democracy – a 36-point common programme to “save the motherland from the clutches of military dictatorship” – that Mrs Bhutto, who heads the Pakistan People’s party, and Mr Sharif signed in May 2006.
“Both of us are committed to reforming the military establishment. So I hope that we will have a consensus within the parliament on the reforms that we are going to bring and that the military would not be able to play one of us off against the other,” Mrs Bhutto said.
“Mr Nawaz Sharif and I agree. Mr Nawaz says, ‘You should be the prime minister for the first five-year term’, and after that five-year term he wants to run. So I hope that we can move forward. That’s a verbal discussion between us but that is what he has said to me.”
But Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, the secretary-general of the PML (N), denied there was any such offer from Mr Sharif. The claim and counter-claim illustrate the tensions between opposition groups as they jockey for position in a fast-changing political scene.
*“The people will decide in fair elections who forms the government,” he said. “If she forms the government, Mr Sharif has said we will respect her mandate, or that of anyone else elected by the people. This is a new development in Pakistani politics.”
For either to become prime minister would require General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan’s embattled president, to reverse his position that neither of the former prime ministers will be allowed back into the country and to rescind a law barring them from a third term.
Gen Musharraf is under US pressure to honour a pledge to step out of uniform by December, allow back the two exiled leaders and abandon plans to be re-elected by the outgoing parliament before fresh elections throw up a less favourable electoral college.
**Mrs Bhutto, who has served as prime minister twice, between 1988 and 1990 and 1993 and 1996, acknowledged that the PPP had been discussing a possible deal with Gen Musharraf that would enable him to continue as president, provided he agreed to quit as army chief. **
“We’ve had discussions but they have not moved forward,” she said. “We’ve left all options open. We may abstain or we may resign. To say that we’ve decided not to vote against him would be wrong.”
A poll published in April by the Washington-based International Republican Institute showed the PPP to be the most popular party, with support from 25.7 per cent of sampled voters, an increase of nearly four points on the IRI’s September 2006 poll.

**Benazir claims “verbal” agreement with Sharif reached **

LONDON: Former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto said in an interview published on Monday that she had reached a “verbal” agreement with fellow Pakistan Muslim League (N) Chief Nawaz Sharif in which she would have the first chance at running the country.
Secretary General PML-N Iqbal Zafar Jhgra, however, denied that any such agreement had been reached, the UK-based daily reported.

Speaking to the newspaper, Bhutto said, **“Mr Nawaz Sharif and I agree. Mr Nawaz says, ‘You should be the prime minister for the first five-year term,’ and after that five-year term he wants to run.”

“So I hope that we can move forward. That’s a verbal discussion between us, but that is what he has said to me.” **

She said that she had struck the deal with Sharif so that the pair could present a united front to put the army back under civilian control.

Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, secretary-general of Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (N), denied, however, that the deal described by Bhutto had been reached, with the newspaper quoting him as saying, “The people will decide in fair elections who forms the government.”

Bhutto also acknowledged in the interview that her Pakistan People’s Party had been discussing a potential deal with Musharraf that would allow him to stay on as president so long as he relinquished his role as head of the army.

“We’ve had discussions, but they have not moved forward … We’ve left all options open.”

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned!

well long as you live there are things to see. now mush is totally butchered. even bb and shareef are walking out on him.

BB and NS made historically unique ‘BS’ agreement.

According to ARY … Bai-Nazeer Bhutto has revealed that she made agreement (mahadah) with Nawaz Shareef that she and he would become prime minister of Pakistan for five years in turn. First she would become Prime Minister for five years and than him.

This agreement for all purpose in Pakistan history would be called ‘Bhutto Shareef’ agreement. Or in short BS (B*** S***) agreement :hoonh:

I believe this very important news deserve its own thread and discussion, because this is what Pakistan UNIQUE politics in reality is all about. Just imagine that Bush and Carter making agreement with each other while out of power that, Friend have an agreement, I rule USA for 5 years than it would be you who would rule for next 5 years  Or for instance, Sonia Ghandi making agreement with Advani that, from future, she would be Prime minister of India for 5 years then it would be his turn. Uniqueness is that, who would be prime minister should be choice of people, how anyone can have an agreement of being future prime minister in turn, unless peoples who made such agreement have no concern of people’s choice?

Nevertheless, BB must have told Nawaz that not to worry, she is leading PPP and PPP stands for ‘Peo Pilao Party’, that means in future she would loot for 5 years and than would let NS loot for next 5 years, than she would come back again.

After the agreement both went into deep thoughts. Shareef started thinking that BB is mad and thinks that I am shareef. I love to do looting and plundering for myself, and that has to be one-way traffic of looting and plundering. Let me get on the chair and I will show her how shareef I am.

Meanwhile BB started thinking that, I told Shareef that we will both loot the country together, first me for five years than him, but let times comes, as I am not Bhutto and I prefer to loot and plunder on my own. Once in power Shareef would never see power again, and I will make Shareef eat Bhutta throughout his life.

As for me, I am starting to think that I should better join PPP as agreement says that she would be first. Now suppose if things would change, there would be lot of looting and plundering of those 15 billion dollars reserves held in state bank, plus huge rise in taxes (more than 1000 billion rupees expected for this year against 300 billion rupees in 1999).

I believe that to join her party ‘PPP’ now would be a good move and would give good opportunity of getting a cut from that pie. Kiya khiaal hay, any advice?

Re: BB and NS made historically unique 'BS' agreement.

what is this BS***, does they mean to say that voter have no value! i mean what if voters elected NS first? have they worked this out? will NS will step down despite having majority in the house?
or they will fight from same plate-form, in that case, what about opposition?

this agreement is BS in its nature

Or it can be said like;
'You bat for five overs, and then let me bat for five overs...
If Abba (read the COAS 10 years later) doesnt object to our playing till late in the night, we can have another round, 5 tumharey 5 humare. Deal!
Pugam Pugai shuroo karo. Iftikhar Chaudry humara, Aetezas tumhara...'

It's hard to believe they made such intimate dealing public. Everyone knows how power-hungry and ready for any maneuvers they all are, but such things are generally untold truths.

Anyway, the most significant point coming out of this is where does the Pakistani Public stand!? Are we a party to the decisions at all!?

We keep talking about power to the people, the ability of the people to decide. We say all that is impossible if there is a military dictator at the top (regardless of how non-dictatorial or democratic he may be).

What does all this say about the people, their power, ability, rationality, freedom, choices, options, prospects or faith in democracy or any leaders!?

What's the diff between a dictator with a label acting more democratically than democrats with a label having acted undemocratically in the past and planning to act the same way for atleast the next 10 years while trying to coin methods to keep the saviour (the Army, much welcomed at every take-over by the very public which few years later turns amnesic, easily fooled and emotional) away and unable to disrupt their fixed matches!?

It is quite hopeless, maybe we should just leave Pakistan to them and let them enjoy their matches with or without coaches/umpires undisturbed...

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned!

^:hehe: for some reason i dont think either of them will get to the field this time around inshAllah.

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned!

Well, if you only have option A or B than what do you do? You take a chance on one and see where you end up.

BTW, we never had democracy ever...and its b/c our military never allowed us to have one & nor does our military respect will of the people. I say let the system work, and let the institutions become stronger and then and only then we can talk about democracy and the rule of law. And that will never happen unless armed forces are 100% under civilian control.

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned!

There is reason why Musharraf is right in banning these two for running in election. No good can come from Benazir and Nawaz's government.

Re: BB and NS made historically unique ‘BS’ agreement.

BB is playing Nawaz for a fool as usual, which is why his party have slammed her claims. :hehe:

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

Geo is reporting that BB was suddenly found in KSA, while her party leadership was unaware of her travel plans to the Kingdom. She performed Umrah and headed to Riyadh.

How do the Saudis allow her to travel with a na-mehram (or was Bilawal with her-is he baaligh now?) and even travel to Riyadh?

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

topi drama :)

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned!

Elections have merely been 'elections', rather 'selections', this time they made the deal public, NS knows that he cannot come to power immediately as he was 'overthrown' by Busharraf so he can't be first to be 'democratic ruler'.

This 'deal' exposes many things which we never did in past.

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

why would ganga want his ‘followers’ to get mad at him?

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

Well, we should not be jealous with those Prince (NS) and Princess (BB) of Pakistan. They have suffered for too long without touching the goodies of Pakistan they deserve as nation is their subject and nation job is to serve these two masters. Just imagine the booty in waiting for them:

15 to 16 billion dollars in state bank reserves.

Over 1000 billion rupees (17 billion dollars) federal yearly tax revenue, from where they can easily pinch some 400 to 500 billion rupees a year.

But the biggest booty in waiting is the loan they can take, as debt to GDP ratio has gone down too much and these lucky goons once in power can easily take around 80 to 90 billion dollars loan to bring that debt to GDP ratio back to 1999 level.

[Total debt in 1999 was over 100 percent of GDP (38 billion dollars plus 1700 billion rupees = 69 billion dollars in an economy of around 64 billion dollars).

Total debt today in 2007 is around 51 percent of GDP (38 billion dollars plus 2250 billion rupees = 75 billion dollars in an economy of around 146 billion dollars.

Present Government wants that the debt in next 5 to 7 years should get reduced to 20 percent of GDP

http://www.app.com.pk/en/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=10277].

Now with such possible booties to grab, I am sure that there is enough for them two to share the loot and they know that, hence this Bhutoo-Shareef. deal.. Obviously, this B*** S*** deal would do a lot of good to HRHs western accounts and HRHs western properties.

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

Little noticed, but quite significant as well.

MMA leader, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed who was the first to boycott/“resign” in protest at the Women’s Protection Bill has just met PM Shaukat Aziz and made up with the govt.

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2007\06\17\story_17-6-2007_pg7_13

It may be that the MMA are also angling for a deal with Musharraf, just as BB is?

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

No need to worry, democracy is safe in Pakistan, Musharraf will win the elections, rigged but he will win with overwhelming majority. How sweet. :)

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

Yup, have the Gulab Jaman ready. :D

Re: Democracy, Deals & Darned! (merged)

with most 'champions' of democracy willing to cut a deal with him for their own power, I dont doubt that he will win.
