people call me haleem in mazaaq on gs but it doesn't bother me because it's not my real name, it's just a nick......

We need to get easy on each other, seriously. I mean why there are so many threads being opened about the same thing, someone has even started a poll. I call myself Paki, so what?

Yup Islamabad is not Islo and Fatima is not Phatty or Faty or Fati.
I do abbreviate names and words but try to make sure that they do not turn into something demeaning.

In my opinion a Capitol city named after our beloved religion warrants some dignity and respect…seems some people may want it to sound like Oslo or is it Iglo…now which is it? …
that is part of the confusion…

Exactly, if you read sagar’s post, it clearly states that ‘offensive’ names, or names meant in an offensive way should be considered wrong. Take fati or isloo, they are hardly offensive or demeaning.

shortening a name is not offensive unless you use it in a context in which you intentionally are trying to offend someone. It’s about your intention really.

Calling Fatima (the member) fati or phati or phats are names of endearment IMO. now if she takes offense to it and I continue to call her by that name…then it would be considered offensive.

I would nvr call mirch a paki because he would consider it offensive…however I wouldnt have a problem calling TLK a paki since he knows that I am not trying to offend him (and he is proud to be a paki anyway lol).

umm i remember reading that Prophet PBUH gave nick name to one of her wife( cant recall who) but i read:emmy: ok

oh and in Abu-Bakar:razi: and Abu-huraira s names bakar means goat and huraira means cat.so this prooves giving nicks is ok as long as its not abusive

China, India and many many more countries our age have long crossed most of their success milestones and going forward every single day.....and after 61 years, we as a community discussing if someone's nick name on some msg board is ethical ?

Don't you think there is something seriously wrong with us ? and that's why we are left behind, way behind even from where we started 61 years ago....

Please do not use bad nick names for words Like “Islam, Pakistani, Fatima” or for that matter any Name that people hold in high esteem!

Check this out for yourself our Holy Quran teaches us about this very subject in Surah Hujjaraat Ayat #11:

You see if Pakistan wants to earn the respect of the World Cummunity…
then Pakistani’s atleast should have some respect of the names that our forefathers choose for our Country…

and above all the main reason Pakistan was formed was because Allah (SWT) chose the name “ISLAM” for the followers of Rasul Allah

and Islamabad is a fine name for the Capitol of Pakistan…but some Pakistani’s feel that is not cute enough…so they want it to sound like “Iglo”…to them I say go North young man you will find plenty of Igloos…
