49:11**(Y. Ali)** O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.
I know Mirch has a thread about this also…this is to support Mirch’s argument
Yup Islamabad is not Islo and Fatima is not Phatty or Faty or Fati.
I do abbreviate names and words but try to make sure that they do not turn into something demeaning.
I am also surprise .. short form of a name is not demeaning, in fact it shows more love and affection .. If I call Mirch .. Mirchoo .. or someone calls me Tilloo .. that shows closeness than insult ..

I am confused now
Exactly, if you read sagar's post, it clearly states that 'offensive' names, or names meant in an offensive way should be considered wrong. Take fati or isloo, they are hardly offensive or demeaning.

Please read my post again. I said I also use abbreviations and nicks for name but I make sure that the name does not turn something into demeaning.
Like I will not call Fatima , Fati , Fatee , Phatee , etc. But surely I call Adnan as ad-doo.

shortening a name is not offensive unless you use it in a context in which you intentionally are trying to offend someone. It's about your intention really.
Calling Fatima (the member) fati or phati or phats are names of endearment IMO. now if she takes offense to it and I continue to call her by that name...then it would be considered offensive.
I would nvr call mirch a paki because he would consider it offensive....however I wouldnt have a problem calling TLK a paki since he knows that I am not trying to offend him (and he is proud to be a paki anyway lol).
