As I sat their with two other of my co-workers, struggling with my big bowl of Ceaser Salad at TGI Fridays, I heard the term ‘sexy’ in one of their boring conversations.
Perked up, I actually tried to pay attention. They seem to be arguing about one of these girly singer groups that have popped up on the MTV lately. One insisted that the girl with the long hair was sexy, but not beautiful, while the other disagreed. This went on for quiet some time as they explored the girls physical features … finally, I burst out “How do you define the term Sexy”?
Looking at me with silly eyes, one of them tried to explain her version of sexiness. The other looked confused, and once she was finished, loaded on me his version of definitions.
Long story short, I indeed started another argument between the two which went on for the rest of the night.
As their conversation turned to ‘blah blah’ again, I went on with my struggle with the Salad. And there … it dawned on me, why not post it in ‘The Corner Room’ … !!!
So, how do you guys define the term ‘sexy’ what does it actually mean? Is it used as a slang only or actually a work with meanings?
And most of all, are there people who are considered beautiful but not sexy and vice versa? How do you make such a distinction?
Do Paki use the term often? If so, in what context?
Maybe "sexy" refers to one's own idea of what one is sexually attracted to, "beautiful" may refer what the percieved cultural norms are... although these categories are not 100% excusive of each other.
ahmad, here in our circle of friend and all the college/university "LIFE", the word beautiful and sexy are used in the following manner: (GENERALLY SPEAKING, that is NOT rule of thumb) BEAUTIFUL: ACCORDING to the college/university 'culture' it deals "MOSTLY" with face/facial attraction, beauty/attractiveness of anything neck-and-above.. while SEXY: is used towards the image created by NOT the face only, but OVERALL bodyshape, FIGURE as we may call it..
just my addition, as i have brought this question many times in our circle and only thing that they were able to come up with THIS..
that beautiful=attractiveness due to facial areas, and sexy=attractiveness due to overall figure..

thori si to zindagi hay, hanss ke issko kaat lain...

after my reply, its easily understandable that its the OVERALL shape of the car that would make it look 'sexy'.. (harmones could be ANOTHER aspect of using the word 'sexy'), but over all figure is more likely to be the answer of this one..
I have even heard a father say it to his daughter ... which I think, totally goes against the idea of hormone raging=sexiness!
exacto!
Maybe the word 'sexy' is used like the word 'love' ... totally different meaning in different contexts! Not?
CLOSE, but no..

I think this was the best definition - atleast thats the way we look at it too. Plus I am sure girls percieve sexiness differently but for guys i think this was an accurate description
"Not only is life a bitch, it has puppies."
Adrienne Gusoff.
I remember when I was 14+ and I saw a girl covered in White Burqa with white gloves and glasses, my jaws were touching the ground and I guess she appealed to me. I am not sure if it does happen when I see any women in wearing shuttle-cock type burqa. So I don’t know if it’s the personal quality or something else or just simply sex-appeal.
One thing for sure nobody’s hormones are raging or no one calls a women wearing burqa “sexy”
Another thing, if the meaning of sexy is just “highly appealing or interesting” then how come we don’t use it within our family members like my brother is very sexy. It doesn’t sounds right.
Hmmmm, Khansahib, people do use the term "sexy" for their siblings, parents etc. This is not necessarily true in Muslim households because of our norms but I have heard people saying "oh you should see my brother, he is very sexy, you will love him!"
Secondly, Ahmadjee, the word sexy connotes the word "sex",, the main root of other derived adjectives from the term. I think sexy means a lot of things. It could be stating physical description, emotions, also sounds, "oh he has a sexy voice",, probably you have heard women say that all the time.
I have noticed a new trend nowadays. Anything different from the ordinary is now considered "sexy" ! I think it has to do with the imagination.

Sexy hmmm, i go along with Cat-Woman it sure is a quality in a person that turns you on.
But for the people we don't know about and still call sexy like some models or stars, i believe the term can be summarized this way, as it could be any of the following:-
The way they walk
The way they talk
The way they look
The way they do something (adayen)
The way they react to something
For strangers mostly they are known as sexy by their curves, or their matak matak kar chalna
And yes someone sexy doesn't need to be beautiful and vice versa. And ofcourse it all lies in the eyes of the beholder, some would use the sexy term in the way they tell their friends about their new car .
Lady Intellect, I have heard this as well coz a colleague at the Uni once told me that her daughter is very sexy. Initially, I couldn't say a word as how these people can talk like this.
A lot of terms have been abused and I think same is the case with word "sexy". If people use term "gay" for homosexuals then it doesn't change the meaning of gay as being happiness. It is rather changing the meaning of words to fit the society.
