my fiance agrees with you...he used to call me his 'wife' he still does...he said calling someone a gf doesnt give the same respect as calling someone a wife...and ikinda agree...but then the fact is you aarent married...you are in a relationship...i dont like the word bf either...makes it seem like so casual...i prefer fiance

Lol it's a weird term because even in the west, back in the day, people were not as free sexually as they are now, you can thank the hippies for that. I think getting to know someone over a period of time is alright. The mullahs will disagree but a lot of times, education etc doesn't allow people to get married as soon as they hit 18 or whatever the going age is.

Most of the time you might be in different universities anyways so all the contact will be via phone or chat etc. No harm in that.

Obviously some people even in Pakistan have physical relationships with their BFs/GFs but it's not as common as it is here.

I think it's fully possible and ok to have a non physical relationship before marriage. That way, you get to know someone (their temperament etc) but still have that distinction between marriage and GF (living together, physical relationship....morning breath, um washroom "noises").

It should not be used as a term "for their friend in opposite gender"... coz generally accepted definition of bf/gf is that there is some kinda relationship between them (physical or non-physical)... Friends from opposite genders should only be termed as friends or for clarity purposes 'male friends' and 'female friends' and not bf/gf... after all the terms bf/gf does not belong to our society and culture and if our society is accepting these terms, it should narrate the same meaning as that in the Western world.. kisi ki burai apnao tau poori tarah apnao :P I hate how our Paki youth has adopted the Western culture and how they would like to make useless attempts about keeping it in Islamic and social limits which is totally impossible... either you are doing something RIGHT or WRONG... there is nothing called doing something WRONG in the RIGHT way :P
