means different things to different people...

as far as im concerned i think there should be NO physical relation at all between a girl and guy before marriage....it doesnt matter what name you give to it. For me talking etc is ok as long as its to get to know a person before getting married to them.....or will lead to marriage :)

Personally, for me, it is companionship with commitment to make it work. And if it does work well enough for both of them (including similar goals), then it leads to marriage.

Many people don't make the commitment to marriage right when they start going out. But if it's good, marriage might just be that relationship's fate. I, for one, didn't see myself getting married to my SO right away because I was too young to be thinking about it. Different people feel the need for that commitment at different points in their lives.

The relationships that don't lead to marriage might just be because that is not the conscious goal in mind (i.e. truely casual relationships) , or that differing goals cause rifts in the relationship. Then, I guess, it is just for companionship (and fun).

Girlfriend’s are kind of species which are used by guy for two months 24/7. Cash & gifts can stretch two months time frame to 6 months.
But eventually, as this species is commonly found brainless, so they are dumped, because new one’s are easily available.

For me it means a commitment of a lifetime. Not just having a relationship to show off that yea people i have a girlfriend. To me having a gf or bf means being commited to them for marriage, if there is no chance of getting married then stay out of any pre marital relationship. Also any sort of physical relation is a no no.

But then why not legitimize it? If there is no difference between having a BF or a fiance then make it official. ^

Both are Illegitimate, be it girlfriend or fiance...
As far as i know, girl is legitimate for a boy only after nikkah...and any relationship before nikkah is against Islam.

Since bf/gf have such negative connotations I hate using the word bf. I mean is there any other word for someone you will marry iA', your parents know, but find an engagement pointless and at this point you both are not ready to be married because of education?

So I find nothing illegitimate about it since ALLAH gives us the right to choose a partner ourselves, instead of marrying a stranger.

Indeed, Allah give us right to choose a partner, but he didn't give us right to take a free trial of a partner before marriage...:D
