I think it means there is a romantic attachment, growing love and respect, and sexual attraction.

However, I do think you can have this relationship WITHOUT physical contact; it's just difficult to maintain that.

I guess what Im trying to figure out is...how much do you have to know someone to want to tie the knot with them? Is being a girlfriend necessary?

i hate both those words and they do not define sucha relationship properly...or i have different expectations :D

but anyways,

i never understood "the cash and gifts deal" with this jhamela! :D can't imagine being comfortable with that. i would think sometinhg like that would sour a relationship, but i guess some people are good at dealng with all this

This term 'girlfriend' has different meaning for different cultures . For example in Pakistan she is the girl who tells you to feed a Rs. 500 card for her phone , so she can talk to you all night long . In America she is almost your wife subtracting a marriage certificate .

Well i must more than enough to know if she (in my case) is compatible with me. It is possible to be together for couple of lunches before even you are thinking about marrying. I.e, before even asking for girl's hand in marriage she is what i am looking for in a partner then..don't mind finding out more. The more you know, interesting it gets if everything goes smoothly.

Well i must more than enough to know if she (in my case) is compatible with me. It is possible to be together for couple of lunches before even you are thinking about marrying. I agree... but this bf/ gf culture has become sooo common in Pakistan.. I have been living outside Pak for more than a decade and I find this culture to be a way different than the culture back then... the terms bf/ gf were not used that openly back then...

Knowing a girl for marriage purpose is not a bad thing, if the guy is serious and involves the family from the beginning... however, who in the world would guarantee that the guy/ girl is serious to take the relationship to the next level (i.e. marriage) if they just keep on dating each other for say like a year or more...

I really find spending time with bf/ gf to be of no use as this is not something which originally belongs to our culture and religion... When a guy/ girl is ready to get married, he/ she could interact/ communicate little (I guess little communication is enough to decide for necessary compatibility... u dun need to spend years to know the compatibility level)... and decide to get married/ engaged rather than hovering around as bf/ gf... If no intention of getting married, then this culture of bf/ gf surely DOES NOT belong to our society...

Having friendship with the opposite gender is not a bad thing if kept within the limit (there is no way one can avoid with such friendships as there is co education and much interaction with the people from both the genders)... as soon as any of them sees the start of any feelings towards each other, either try to make it official through family or just stop that friendship (which could lead them to become bf/ gf with no future at all, while ruining their lives in the future when they get married to someone else)...

In Pakistan, this term is used in totally different meaning. everyother boy and girl use this term for their friend in oppposite gender. internationally this term is used for couples who have physical relationship. but i personally don't like this term.... it gives wrong impression

Personally, for me, a girlfriend is a girl with whom you have a serious relationship. Both of you give it a try and see if it will work in the long term. If it does work out, then of course marriage is the next step although it doesn't 95% of the time.

Physical relations are the natural progression of events in a long term relationship.
