the most probable reason why the detective suggested that you don't press charges is because if the guy really is an unstable drunk, then the charges could be perceived by him as provocation and cause him to really lash out.
if this was just a drunken misdial (sounds unlikely), the episode will die a quick death with the perp, but it will live on in your hearts as fear. A sad but real side-effect.

I probably would just ignore the call unless he kept calling back in which case I would call the police and ask them to trace the number and press charges.

Do u carry mase or something with you all the time, I would also suggest taking some sort of self sedence class for u and the kids too...U never know waht the looney bin might do in another drunkard stupor. Does he know your address or something????

hmmm ms Amber, I dont carry mace but I have had Kung-Fu intruction with emphasis on self-protection. I was taught how to basically cripple a person with one well-aimed shot at the foot...the top of the arch has so many nerve endings, its one of the most sensitive parts on the body. Stomp on it and VOILA, person is crippled....
We arent sure whether the guy knows our address, he told the detective that he doesnt know us and doesnt even remember calling us (well then HOW did he know our name...our number is unlisted!!) Anyway, my brother in law is a cop and is finding out more about the whole thing for us. Its been quiet, no more calls or anything but I dont plan to let my guard down either.
