When would you address a person in an email as, ‘Dear’? Or do you just write, Hi falaana dhamkana,
I NEVER use Dear for work related emails. However, anything else, I tend to… is there a rule of thumb or pinky on usage of the word dear in emails?

I only write "dear" in letters, never emails...emails always begin with a greeting

Well professional E-mails often just start with the name of the person you're E-mailing.

i miss emailing my professor…its amazing how one can exchange pleasant greetings over an email. he never began his emials with a “dear” either ![]()

I can't remember the last time I used 'Dear' on any mail or email. I don't use it at all. If its my family .. its 'Dearest'... everyone else just gets a polite greeting.

It's gay to start an e-mail with Dear. That's for formal letters only :p
Just say: 'Hi Falaanay' or 'Hello Dhimkaanay' or something like that. :)

I use dear in formal letters, and if I have to email them and I dont know the person I write 'dear', especially potential employers. To my Prof I write "Hi Garth!".
