I think smoking is an utterly disgusting habit. Someone needed a ride today; right when he got in he pops out a ciggy and lights it up in MY car without even asking me if I was alright with it. I just made up something and told him I’m allergic to cigarette smoke and all he did was roll down the window so that the fumes go out INSTEAD of getting rid of it. SHESH! So all you smokers out there, I hope you guys have the decency to ask before you light it up, if you’re in someones presence or their property. Its not your pyooo di gaaari where you can start smoking as you please! I dont like smoking, so I dont want any passive smoking either.
sorry had to vent a little, because my car smells like cigerrette smoke!
People should respect other people more and he should have respected the fact it that it was your car. He could have waited. It does happen though and just next time may be a bit more firmer?!
How about getting a 'No Smoking' sticker and sticking it in a vsiible spot in your car :D
People can be so tactless that its makes you wonder about their intelligence. Some things fall into basic courtesy/respect and its amazing how it just goes over their heads.
You did the favor of giving this guy a ride. You weren't obligated. You decided to spend your car fuel on this person. The least that he could have done was to ASK you first if he could smoke in your car. And after telling him that you're allergic, the polite thing would be to not smoke at all until he gets out of your car and away from you. How rude. I guess some people give top priority to their nasty addictions over respect toward others.
Spock, one thing i've learned is that some people don't understand hints or clues. They just go right over their heads or in one ear and out the other. I've found that the direct approach works best with them. Next time, just say, "I have nothing against your preference for smoking but I don't allow smoking in my car. And I would prefer that you hold off on that until you're out of my car. Thanks."
^There's nothing offensive about saying that at all. After all it's your car, your gas, and your time that they're spending. And since they're not paying u for the ride, they can at least hold off on shoving their beloved cancer stick in their mouth until they're out.
That is very mean of that person to smoke in yout car Mr. Spock. My brother has friends who come to our house and smoke inside and I always fight with my brother later. But he doesn't listen and stop his friends. It is very horrible smell and now all our curtains and carpet are always smelling.

One of my Uncles is the type of person who is afraid to speak up and really hesistates on such things. His child was suffering from asthma and always coughing when these regular guests would come. One day he got so fed up that he framed a no-smoking sign! Lol! Sadly, everyone would laugh, ignore it and smoke next to it! Cruel!
Then one day Uncle spoke up and told them to take their cigs outside. Guests really minded this but my Uncle had had enough esp' as his child was suffering. So he told them they could leave. Clearly they didn't have any respect for him or his family. Those people were so shocked as they never heard my Uncle like this. They stopped smoking and apologized.
Like X2 said, it is lack of respect for others and their property. Smoking annoys a lot of people, many are allergic to it, smokers need to realize that and be careful as to when and where to light one up.
I'm allergic to smoke gives me this nasty flu that usually triggers an earache! :( nobody in my family smokes.. but when my brother has been around his "smoking social circle" we can sense it instantly!
As a former smoker I have to say that not all smokers are jackasses. Was this guy a desi? Cuz that would explain a lot too. Spock, I'm very surprised you didn't ask this douche to not smoke in your car, period! If it were me, I would have asked him to not even light up when he popped one out.
When I smoked, I didn't smoke in my house or my car. I smoked outside and after smoking I always washed my hands and mouthwashed, nobody wants to smell your nasty smoke. I also always held my cigarette downwind from me so that my clothes didn't smell like smoke. When people found out I smoked, they were surprised because they had NO clue.
You should go to to this guy's house/office/car after eating a big bowl of beans and let your colon do the rest.
I dont mind if people smoke around me.....like if we are outside or something because you really have no right to tell them not 2. You can just walk away from it.
however it's rude for someone to light one up in your house or car without your permission. I would have made it clear from the start...no smoking in my car.
Oh man don't get me started on the subject.
In Chicago , you can not think to open windows or doors during winter weather. Out of 20 people invited to my home this guy takes out cigarette and was about to light it , I told him , if you do not mind can you go out and smoke in the patio. He was embarrassed and said ok he would skip smoking altogether . I could feel the angst in him during the whole party. He was new to the country form desh though.
I do not care , you are in my home ,in my car , my rules apply if you do not want to follow, you will never ever be invited.
