What are some wedding traditions for the day after the wedding and the reasons behind them?
My friend mentioned one to me which sparked my interest. In her family the day after the wedding, the guys family brings the bride and groom and everyone over for breakfast or brunch the next day hosted by the girls family. She said the reason was so that everyone could see the girl and guy after spending some time with each other and see from their facial expressions if they were happy together.
What are some other day after traditions and rasms?
Mano Rani we have this also its usually done at the girls house and it pretty casual something like a brunch ta ke loog aram se oot hai magar nowadays people are also having it in a small hall or restaurant type place if they have invited alot of people it just depends on how you want to have it.
This tradition is also in my family. Except like Pathan26 said... we are going kinda over the top with it.... my parents are hosting it at a hotel and the food is going to be catered. We are hiring a photographer and I will still be really dolled up.... still looking very "dulhan-fied" ...except will not be wearing dupatta on my head. My brunch dress was just mailed from pakistan.. i can not wait to see it! I will be wearing artificial jewelry on the actual wedding ...but my families khandaani zevar that has been passed down for the last 3 generations is what I will wear on my brunch.
My only worry is that i am going to be so exhausted ...... im not really a morning person lol.
THe reason we r doing it this way is because we are hosting the shaadi in another city ...so we r all going to be out of town anyways. The same guests invited for the shaadi will also be invited to the brunch. It is upto them if htey want to come or not.
Since I live in the US ... this is basically my one day to dress up post shaadi and feel "dulhanfied". As opposed to Pakistan as I know new dulhans wear beautiful clothing and jewelry and go on many dawats after shaadi. I'll instead be going on my honeymoon and then back to work!!! :(
Ooooo PunjabiRose your lunch sounds exciting! We are having mine kinda big also - its being done in a hotel just because there will be so many people from the baaraat also alot of our out of town guests so i cant be done at my house so its just working out better this way. I also plan to get all dressed up also - ill prob be wearing this sharara from my bari ta kai mere sasuraal kush ho jai ha since I’m picking my own walima outfit (Allah ka sukar!!) I also wont wear the dupatta on my head but I’m thinking about getting my hair and makeup done again for this event - I’m not sure though. Are you going to be getting yours done?? We wont be having a photographer so I’m leaning towards not getting it done but I think I’ll be so tired and wont be able to function and will end up with crooked eyeliner :o
I totally understand when you say this is your time to get all dolled-up so I’m trying to milk it all week phir iss ke baad is back to reality for me also which IA will be great since Ill be with my hubby
The original tradition was for the girl's sisters and cousins to take breakfast for the bride and groom, but over time it's evolved to taking breakfast for the family also, and now hosting breakfasting/bruch for them.
In some families the elder ladies give milk to the bride in the morning to help her regain her "strength". I would be MORTIFIED if my Nani-in-law did this!!!!!!
When does one actually get their bari??? I have like no idea! I always assumed I would get it once I have been ruksatified … like before the walima?
I am wearing a maxi dress! I had it made so that the color matched the stones in the khandaani zevar. So excited to see it… pray for me that it turned out ok!
Yes - I am lucky that the same MUA who will be doing my hair and makeup the day before for the shaadi is also available that morning to do my hair as well. I am a MUA myself…so I will probably just do my own makeup for the brunch
How are you planning on doing your hair!!! I am so conflicted… sometimes I think some sort of updo …to showcase the set … sometimes I think wearing it down in a styled way so that my layers are more pronounced and I have more volume on top.
My biggest worry for that morning totally is not being able to wake up in time to be able to get ready. I hatteeeeee waking up early…
omg … hilarious… never heard of this one!!! hahahahaha
PunjabiRose - as per my understanding you are right about when you get your bari - basically after Ruksati is done magar thorai loog also bring everything to the mehndi also depends. I will be getting mine after I move to my new home IA which is out of the state I live in. I am wearing this one particular outfit which they intitially bought be for my Walima outfit but ya it wasnt so cute (and thats just me being nice) so we agreed I will get my own and so thats why Ill wear it to the day after brunch (Allah ka shukar my fiance is letting me do what I want as far as clothes go!!!)
OMG I'm so loving the matching of your dress to your zewar!! IA it will turn out great - mere Duaein aap ke sath hai :)
You are a MUA - thats awesome and your so lucky I'm soooo bad when it comes to makeup especially eyeliner :(
So what all is in your zewar?? I think if you have a tikkah and jhoomer you should do you hair up - but then it has to be done right since you arent wearing dupatta on your head so you cant see any random bobby pins sticking out bc that looks tacky. If its just a tikkak do the half up half down - that look sooooo cute with a tikkah I love it! And also it wouldnt take as long to do since you think you will be running late - its an easy style - just back comb a little bit to create some sort of bump for the hair to rest on so you get some height depending on how much you want. I will do my hair half up half down and I'm planning on wearing just a tikkah even though the set has a jhoomer also since the day before on the shaadi/baarat I'll be wearing a jhoomer so I wanted to change it up!!
Girl I totally understand about not being able to wake up on time - what time if your dawat gonna start?? I told my parents please tell everyone either 12 or 1 - I'm hoping they say 1 so thats more time for me :)

OMG i hope no one tries to feed me milk - ill be hiding under the table sharam se!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I throw up if i drink milk.. i absolutely hate ittt
last time my MIl tried to feed me milk.. I just gave it to my fiance and my fiance sort of told her in a rude way not to force me. :(
hopefully no milk will b involved in the wedding stuff

I am also moving to another state after my shaadi hun! So yea.. I guess getting it after the shaadi then....
And like you - I am having both my bridal and walima dresses made myself .... for similar reasons as you. lol. And yea..allah ka shuker hai that Fiance is on board with it. Please also do dua that my bridal and walima dress also reach me ok!! I collaborated with a designer in Pakistan to have one of a kind pieces made for both events.... fashion ...makeup...its all my passion. So it makes sense I design my own clothes... i just pray they reach me ok. I have faith in the designer.. just scared about the shipping process...
Girl you are sooooooooo lucky that your event is starting at like noon/1!!!
I thought mine would start at 10am ... but now my mom is telling me that it is going to start at 9am. Ughhhhhhhhhh
My set includes Tikka, Big earrings and big choker :) No jhumar! But that is a great idea about hair half up and half down. Whats your opinion (all guppies) .. should I wear my hair like this even tho that is how I wore it for my engagement??? Or opt for a different hair do?
You make a great point about not wanting random bobby pins to be showing...i didnt even think of that.... thanks...

Omg ... i feel like we agree on 100% everything. lol. I feel the same way... i freaking hate milk. Unless its like hot chocolate. Yes I'm a little kid. .... and yes... i really hope there are no weird milk rasms involved with the wedding. ugh.
another day after the wedding tradition that I have seen ...and it's totally a Sikh tradition that hasn't died in my family bc we are actually somewhat recent converts -
It's called "Swagat" - first time I saw it go down was at my mamu's shaadi.
After the shaadi was over, my nani welcomed my new Mumani at her new home by putting sarson ka tel (Mustard Oil) on both sides of the entrance door.
Have no idea what the significance behind it is...and the only other time I have seen it done is either at my family weddings or sikh weddings I have attended.
I really should have asked my nani what the deal is with it... she is already telling my khalaa to stock up on the mustard oil and gave her a lecture when she suggested olive oil for the tradition when my cousin gets married in December. lol
