Gosh, this whole thread seems like a tempest in a teapot! To settle everything and put this thread to rest:
American men are skint as buzzards and will sooner shank you in the face than offer you a free meal (the exception being those that work for soup-kitchens and homeless shelters, bless them). So, unless your date takes place AT said soup-kitchen or homeless shelter, you'll likely be paying for half the meal. Not since the age of MadMen or Pretty Woman has a man agreed to pay for anything more than a skinny Mocha-Latte at Starbucks (you want whip-cream, YOU pay!). And being pretty, witty and bright won't get you any further than being homely, dim and surly, so just save your collective breaths!
