Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

This is a Great Drama indeed. It has everything from story line, cast and incredible acting. One of the best thing ever happened to modern day Pakistan Drama. It will surely change the upcoming trend of Drama. Simply the best and will be watched for many years to come.

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

from what I have read of FB that might not be the case. Rasheeda Khala will lead to Bano moving out of Hassan's home and who knows maybe going insane or something....

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

i cant wait till next week!

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

*is bano goin to leave the house and hassan goin to marry rabia. thats no good. *

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

^^ it seems that way. Bano is a mature woman now and not a 19 year old spoiled brat like Rabia so I think once she finds out that Hassan is engaged to Rabia and soon to be married, she'll move out.

I am little divided about this week's episode. I really wish that there was no Love Triangle and that the story focused on how Hassan helps Bano come out of post-traumatic disorder. IMO that to me would have been very interesting to watch.
And why the heck is Rabia always dressed like a model? I don't think a whole lot of 19 year olds in the 1950s dressed up like they were about to go on the ramp. I wish she would have focused on her acting as much as she focused on her lipstick!

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

I think Rabia is meant to be bratty as she's really young and hasn't really experienced the trauma of partition. According to what the role demands, Mehreen is doing a good job and tbh I cannot see how anyone can bring more depth to the role of Rabia.

Period dramas do tend to glamorise characters and settings... trust me this is nothing compared to Hollywood and British interpretations of the 1950's!

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

but we've all seen pics of our grandparents from the 50s and 60s and they did not look like Rabia's character.

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

^ Exactly. It's all about aesthetics - films and dramas are meant to be visually appealing I guess. If actors were made to dress the way our grandparents did back then you'll find others complaining on this very forum about how backwards and tasteless our dramas are etc...
I think Rabia's look is inspired from likes of Shamim Ara and Meena Shorey

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

yeah I just don't agree with it. Not sure what their intention was to make Rabia look like a glam doll. just to attract young viewership?

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

I think they are trying to show the changing mores of the times. If you notice Hassan's engagement with Bano was a segregated affair while his engagement with Rabia has a mixed gathering with both the bride and groom sitting in the same room. If you read up on history a lot of people will tell you how Muslim women who observed purdah in United India stopped doing so in Pakistan (though they still covered their heads). Plus people who made it big following the partition (mostly by confiscating influential Hindu's residences and businesses that they left behind) tended to have extremely lavish and rather upstartish lifestyles. If you notice Rabia's mom's dressing and hairstyles as compared to the earlier episodes, it all seems to be pretty well established. No wonder Hassan says that Rabia can have many boys clamouring after her but not someone like Bano.
And I actually respect the director for not trying to attract viewers with gimmickery like throwing in a comical character etc.

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

I cried, cried… and cried some more in today’s episode. The way Bano described the horrific events to Rabia… :frowning:

Why don’t they all just leave Bano and Hassan alone… I don’t see the point of Rabia and her mom staying over to “take care” of Bano when he clearly said he doesn’t want to marry Rabia.
What makes her mom think that Hassan would change his mind and agree to marrying Rabia if Rabia takes care of Bano. Or maybe he will?? :hinna:

I saw next week’s preview… where did Bano go??? Maybe I should just read the ending of the novel online somewhere.. :hmmm:

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

so sad :teary1:

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

you're right Mulan that there is a stark difference between Rasheeda and Sultana. Rasheeda still takes her burqa when going out whereas Sultana is wearing those fancy saris all over the place.
I still don't agree with the glammed up version of Rabia but that's how they wanted her portrayed.

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

yeah I can totally see how after doing Bano’s role, Sanam Baloch didn’t take up any acting assignments for a few months. This character will stay with anyone for a Long Long time. You can see such a HUGE difference between the Bano of the first 5 episode, the Bano who lived with Basanta, and the Bano now. WOW again Amazingly portrayed by Sanam. She’s literally played 3+ characters in one role.

My guess is that she’ll probably run away to the place she was first staying at. I am forgetting what that shelter was called.
And they have changed the ending of the story so reading the novel won’t help much

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

Mulan you got it right :) sultana is a nau daulatyya thats why she is not dressing like rasheeda. sultana is also very bossy, if you remember ,in earlier episodes she was telling rabia what to wear. its she who is deciding clothes for rabia. there was another scene which they editted in which she chooses rabias clothes before coming to lahore. she is an interesting character which you must have noticed around you :)

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

REALLY? :bummer: How do you know??

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

you can bet all of us have. btw hats off to you for translating such a strong piece of literature so well to the screen. God knows many capable writers and directors all over the world have stumbled where you have succeeded.

Referencing again to the nau daulatia pann of our society, in all honesty I think it goes back to the time of the partition. I am sorry to be not towing the official "happily ever after for the Muslims" line since i'm not the sort of person to take a rose tinted view of the partition. I'd say that it was the creation of a new country with very few educated or capable people (considering how Muslims lagged behind in every sphere of life in British India) that afforded such upstarts the opportunity to take to positions and money they never deserved in the first place or never would have dreamed of in a United India. As Kishwar Naheed puts it in her autobiography most of these people had left the legacies of their ancestors far behind (literally in another country) and were therefore a lot more reckless(besharam) in their actions as only someone unhindered by respect for the family name and honour can be. Pity such mindset has not been changed even 6 decades down the line and God knows may take generations more to. No wonder then that our society continues to be dominated by this nouveau rich brigade.

btw to get another viewpoint on what the Muslims of India went through during partition, i would urge everyone to watch Garam Hawa based on a short story by Ismat Chughtai. It is available on youtube and is fundamental to a holistic understanding of the partition and why it continues to be relevant even today.

Re: Dastaan - A drama on Partition (Hum tv)

I hated today’s episode. And if Hassan ends up with Rabia, i’m gona protest against this drama.. :snooty:
