Kashmiri, I don’t think anybody said it’s better to be dark. What was said with reference to models is that it is becoming more socially acceptable for desi girls to be brown instead of fair and that models on t.v. as well as actresses like Maria Wasti and a whole bunch of others you see on ARY/GEO are helping breaking that barrier. Five to ten years ago, you would rarely have seen a dark girl in any Pakistani drama. Thank God this is changing and people are being shown more realistically, even though they are still wearing ten pounds of make up … you can still see brown skin.

You will be surprised how big of a role it still plays in society, although it isn’t as bad as it was before and I do believe t.v./documentaries and talking about this issue is helping break down this dark skin taboo. Just speak to any aunty and mostlikely you will hear being fair is on her wish list for her bahu … but the sons don’t really care. Things are changing, slowly, but changing nonetheless.

I don’t think it is Maria Wasti (she was here long before) but indian movies (no matter how much makeup they put on, the actors / actresses are still kaala.. ).

also some societies tend to judge women based on other traits, aside from the color of her skin. looks like u’re one of the “dayum wish i was fair skinned, oh well i can still get a gori wife” types…

Colour is not everythin..what about features, height, and martial prowess. There are some Pukhtunns who are dark, but theyre features, physique distinguishes them. ANd what about the Makranis, fine Pakistani specimen they are.. and they look like somalians.. a very nice type of tan. I think people in Pakistan just dont like the indian-type of dark, thats all, could be due to relations, or even cultural.. but I think cuz overall, it is not attractive.

why did you feel the need to say this about kaala/kaali actors/actresses? This is a prime example of how there is so much negativity associated with being dark by desis.
By the way, half of the actors/actresses in bollywood are naturally fair. I’m just happy that their are great actresses like Rani and Kajol in that they are dark and really pretty.
