Sorry in advance for the stupid Gora question, but how are Hindus identified as being part of one caste or another? Is caste actually listed on their birth documentation, or is it just word of mouth?

According to Hindu teachings they are born into their own castes, and children have to inherit this stigma from their parents, and every body should know their position.
