Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
**Who are Dalits? **
**Caste system **
One of the more confusing mysteries of India is its caste system. The caste system, which has existed already for more than 3000 years, has been developed by the Brahmins (priests) in order to maintain their superiority. Eventually, the caste system became formalised into 4 distinct classes (Varnas). At the top are the Brahmins, the priests and arbiters of what is right and wrong in matters of religion and society. Next come the Kshatriyas, who are soldiers and administrators. The Vaisyas are the artisan and commercial class, and finally, the Sudras are the farmers and the peasant class. These four castes are said to have come from Brahma’s mouth (Brahmin), arms (Kshatriyas), thighs (Vaisyas) and feet (Sudras). Beneath the four main castes is a fifth group, the Scheduled Caste. They literally have no caste. They are the untouchables, the Dalits, which means oppressed, downtrodden and exploited social group.
**The Dalits **
A Dalit is not considered to be part of the human society, but something, which is beyond that. The Dalits perform the most menial and degrading jobs. Sometimes Dalits perform important jobs, but this is mostly not socially recognised. Dalits are seen as polluting for higher caste people. If a higher caste Hindu is touched by an untouchable or even had a Dalit’s shadow across them, they consider themselves to be polluted and have to go through a rigorous series of rituals to be cleansed. In India there are approximately 240 million Dalits. This means that nearly 25% of the population is Dalit. It also means that in a country, where everybody is supposed to have equal rights and opportunities, 1 out of 4 persons is condemned to be untouchable.
In general one can say that being a Brahmin means that you are more privileged. This can imply having a good education and, accordingly, a more powerful position in the society. Being born as a Dalit you will be less well off and because of less education you will have a less good job. In daily life there are a lot of consequences of being a Dalit.
Dalits are poor, deprived and socially backward. Poor means that they do not have access to enough food, health care, housing and/or clothing (which means that their physiological and safety needs are not fulfilled). They also do not have access to education and employment. With deprived we would like to underline the injustice they face in every days life. Officially, everybody in India has the same rights and duties, but the practice is different. Social backwardness, lack of access to food, education and health care keeps them in bondage of the upper castes.
Nevertheless, in the recent past the Dalit society has also thrown up powerful leaders, like Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. He was on of the most powerful personalities to stand for the rights of Dalits.
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
The Muslims unlike the Christians do not know how to understand the caste question and handle riot situations. The persisting unfriendly relations between Muslims, Dalits and OBCs, mainly in the urban areas, are worrying.
The Dalits and Adivasis have close relations with the Christians but not with the Muslims. The OBCs have ambiguous relations with the Christians but they too have inimical ties with the Muslims. The causes for this situation need to be probed by Muslim intellectuals. Otherwise, the Hindutva forces will continue to use the muscle power of the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and the OBCs against the Muslims
The Muslim intellectuals know that in the Hindu system, the Dalits and the OBCs were forcefully stopped from getting an education. The Christian missionaries introduced education to them irrespective of whether they embraced Christianity or not. Jyotirao Phule and Ambedkar have acknowledged the service of missionaries in their writings. However, such constructive work never came from the Muslim intellectuals

Branded as impure from the moment of birth, one out of six Indians lives - and suffers - at the botoom of the Hindu caste system. They are the Untouchables.

Discrimination against India’s lowest Hindu castes is technically illegal. But try telling that to the 160 million Untouchables, who face violent reprisals if they forget their place.
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
discrimination is bad in any form under any idelogy. Its about time people stop tolerating bigotry.
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
You should know!!
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
^ another sad fact
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
Sorry in advance for the stupid Gora question, but how are Hindus identified as being part of one caste or another? Is caste actually listed on their birth documentation, or is it just word of mouth?
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
I feel that this Desinum1 and silly guys are the same …anyhow, Untouchability unfortunately exists in many parts of India and especially in Rural areas. At the same time, there is a sea of change that is happening and you find most of the Brahmins are kicked off. Infact, untouchability is practised more by the OBC’s and other higher castes of even within the daliths themselves. Only education can change the mindset of the people, and it takes time to provide education to all. Slowly but surely we are marching in that direction.

Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
resevation is making slow progress even muslim dalits demand to be included in quota system
Use naukri se lekar padhai tak har jagah sahualt militi hai. Lekin main ek Musalaman dhobi hoon isliye mai in tamam sahulaton se mahroom hoon". (Ram Kumar is Hindu dhobi. From education to job, the government has given him all facilities. But I am a Muslim dhobi. So I have been debarred from all these facilities.)— Ghulam Rasool from Bihar.
“Mere gaon ka Mohan Prasad ek Hindu mochi hai. Sarkar ne use Indira Awas ke tehat pakka makan banwa diya hai. Mai Muslim mochi hoon. Mai pakka makaan men nahi rah sakta kyon ke main SC men nahin ata hoon.” (Mohan Parasd of my village is a Hindu cobbler. The government has made him a concrete house under Indira Vikas Yojna. I am a Muslim cobbler. I have no right to live in concrete house as I have not been included in the list of SC.)— Muhammad Karim from UP
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
According to Hindu teachings they are born into their own castes, and children have to inherit this stigma from their parents, and every body should know their position.
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
Thanks for the info. That's an f'd up system, plain and simple.
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
or take it the other way. Brahmin assume dalits to be ISI agents
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
There are 160 million Dalits in India - that’s a lot of ISI agents. Indian’s should be honest enough to face upto the genocidal slave-like treatment that Hindu’s have treated their fellow Hindu’s, instead of blaming others.
Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
it is more to do with race
The ancient story holds that invaders known as Indo-Europeans, or true Aryans, came from Eastern Europe or western Asia and conquered the Indian subcontinent. The people they subdued descended from the original inhabitants who had arrived far earlier from Africa and from other parts of Asia.
During the genetic studies, in 1996 and 1997, researchers took blood samples from hundreds of people in southern India. The analyses compared the genes from 316 caste members and 330 members of tribal populations, looking for signs of Asian, European and African ancestry.
In the mitochondrial genes passed along by females, Jorde said, they could see the clear background of Asian genes. “All of the caste groups were similar to Asians, the underlying population” that had originally been subdued.

**UA-128-2005: INDIA: Police inaction regarding assault of Dalit woman **
Dear Friends,
The Asian Human Rights Commission(AHRC) has received information from People’s Watch-Tamil Nadu of a caste-based assault on a Dalit woman in Vengamedu village, Perunthrai Taluk, Erode District, Tamil Nadu, India, on 31 March 2005. The only reason for the assault and sexual harassment of Ms. Pappathi was that she used the pathway which she is forbidden to use. The victim was severely assaulted and sexually harassed by a upper caste man, Ramasamay Goundar, in front of people passing by. He pulled off Ms. Pappathi’s sari, tore her blouse and beat her left breast region, right shoulder, and upper right arm twenty to thirty times. He continued to verbally abuse her, using derogatory caste words, in front of people passing by. Ms. Pappathi was extremely humiliated and experienced much physical pain. More seriously, when the victim and her husband tried to lodge a complaint about the incident, Sub-Inspector Sidhuraj of Chennimalai Police Station refused to register the complaint and has since did not take any action in her case. As a result, Ramasamy Goundar has not been arrested even four months after the incident. We request your immediate action in this matter in bringing the perpetrator to justice and providing adequate compensation to Ms. Pappathi for her pain and humiliation.

Re: Dalit women denied temple entry in Bihar by Upper Caste men
A lot of progress has been made on the caste system....in the past they used to pour liquid lead into the ears of the lower caste hindus for just listening upper caste speak.....But they still practice going through ritualistic cleansing using cow dung and urine if they come in contact physicall with a lower caste hindu or a muslim....Bunch of sick savages...
