Apparently, in some communities daal is eaten with rice only. Mughal emperor Babar was also surprised to see Indians eating rice with daal and he wrote in his autobiography ‘Tuzk e Babri’ that these Indians consume grain with grain
Another incident I remember from childhood is when we visit family friends in another town and one of the girl in their family ate omelet with rice. We all were seeing this as egg with rice was not popular in Sindhi community and now egg fried rice are getting popularity very rapidly.
Have you tried roti with daal? Any combination that looked weird to you at some point of time, but consequently you became used to it?
I don't like daal chawal i prefer daal with roti.Egg fried rice are good you don't like it?
I know of a weird combination my cousin used to eat shakar with rice and when i tried to copy her i ended up vomiting.
No I like egg fried rice, its just because the combination was not popular in our community.
Rice and sugar is also common in Sindh. Actually, they eat rice with mango in summer dinners (I never liked it some how) and old people used to have rice, sugar and milk. This mixture was called looRki in our family. There was a girl ‘Ruqayya’ in our neighbor. I couldn’t pronounce her name and start calling her looRki.
Interesting. I never knew it was considered strange to eat daal with roti. Especially Punjabis toh not only eat it with parathas but make daal wale parathe too.
yes.. the person mentioned in OP is from Punjab and was a little bit shy when disclosing this combination. It might not be popular in Pathans and outside India/Pakistan probably.
Not long ago Daal Chawal were very popular especially in rural areas, at least one food of the day used to comprise on the combination. I hate daal and chawal... :(
Another combination that looked weird to some people (specially burgers like Babloo) is aaloo and bhindi. One day I took Bhindi+ Aaloo in office and he said ‘tum Sindhiyon main her cheez main aaloo dalne ki aadat hai’. He also objected aaloo murghi
In the university we used to have Chiicken Roast plus daal and roti, dont know what sort of combination that was. Seemed weird in the beginning but started loving it in the end.
never seen aaloo bhindi and aaloo chicken though...
lol...i have eaten this weird combo in one of the villages i visited during my last visit to India...chicket aaloo! :D
It is weird for us to see many chefs on Tv adding milk to meat dishes. My sister watches some cooking shows and she changes the channel when someone does this harkat with a recipe.

Naan with pakoRa is quite common. You can find this combination being sold near all mazaraat in Sindh. Ones Naheed Khan was giving interview about BB and she told that BB used to have this combo with workers during jalsas.
