Da Vinci Code

i dont know y the churches have taken a strong offense to the book as well as the upcoming movie…anyone tell me why?
I’d also like to know Islamic point of view. If anything I’d think it would validate the muslim view of Jesus PBUH as prophet/messenger and not divine. but im not sure…the Holy Quran doesnt mention Mary Magdalene either so not sure..fill me in

Re: Da Vinci Code

well i know is that da vinci code is fiction... but i have no idea why people are comparing a fiction book to real life...

Re: Da Vinci Code

they say it's fiction but a lot of what is revealed in the book about Jesus and Christianity is true to an extent. I read it a while back so I don't remember all the awesome things about it. Jesus was shown as more of a human being with a wife and children and the church didn't want Jesus to be portrayed in a such a way.

it deals with secret societies that had certain rituals that might be considered a no-no nowadays. But to my knowledge they do exist.

Someone else here remind me of more cool things that were in the book!!

Re: Da Vinci Code

This might come shocking to some of you but religion DOES play a huge part in most of human beings in this world and reaction to this issue from church are very natural, especially since we have noticed people with less interest in faith trend to interest more in fiction and we have seen the example in past few years.

If someone had written a fiction book about our Prophet's (PBUH) life, I bet the reaction here will be a lot different that what some posters have said her but we forget Jesus' (PBUH) life does play a big part in our Muslims' lives as well and we should be just as, if not more, offended by such literature.

Re: Da Vinci Code

I was watching a documentary last night on Discovery channel. The conclusion was that it's merely based on assumptions and speculations and nothing factual. Yes, there are elements of truth there, but the theory is not factual.

At least that is what I could absorb from it.

Re: Da Vinci Code

And same thing I thought about Satanic Verses, I don't know why people went pshycotic at that time, to the point of giving fatwa to kill Salman Rushdie..............

After all it was just a book.

Re: Da Vinci Code

They wondered the same thing when Muslims took offense to the 'toons.

Muslims should reach out to Catholics and build bridges...this is a great opportunity. Let the people of the Books unite!

Re: Da Vinci Code

I agree. If we want their support to end religious slander, we should support their efforts to end it too.

I for one will not be watching this movie.

Re: Da Vinci Code

Same here.

Re: Da Vinci Code

i will be going for the movie, cause the book was excellent read.

Re: Da Vinci Code

I will not read the book. I do not want to buy it, because of the same reason that I will not watch the film.

And after railing against The Da Vinco Code for so long, I am too proud to ask any of my friends who have it if I can borrow it :snooty:

Re: Da Vinci Code

 man you don’t know what you are missing.

Re: Da Vinci Code

Some of you have made a good point about showing similar respect to others, as we'd want for ourselves.

Re: Da Vinci Code

I think I said something similar in another thread, but in any case, Da Vinci Code is a well-written fiction book. It challanges the core of Christian faith by stringing together a tale replete with secret societies, alleged historical deceptions and a modern story told in an excellent fashion. Comparing it to poorly written pieces of crap like Satanic Verses is a huge disservice to literature.

I can fully understand the anger by Christians about this book. If a similar book is written about Islam and our Prophet, I have no doubt it will create a huge fuss with fatwas of murder and mayhem flying all across the globe. Response by Roman church is noticably mild, and for a reason. Excesses of Roman churches past had resulted in the vigor displayed to protect freedom of speech. And this book is an example of freedom of speech and opinion.

Since the story is sold as fiction so trying to find parallals from Islamic rulings seem kinda inane. However, from a muslim stand point, to the best of my knowledge Quran is silent on whether Jesus ever married or had kids. And one way or the other, it does not impact his Prophetic teachings or status. However, as discussed in the book, this theory will have a drastic impact on the image of Jesus cultivated by Catholic church. They make it a story about his sacrifice for the sins of his followers and on this premise the Church draws its powers over lay christians.

Re: Da Vinci Code

I will not buy the book or see the movie,
however anybody interested can watch the program on History channel dealing this subject all this week at around 8 PM EST

Re: Da Vinci Code

da vinci code protrays Jesus PBUH as human than a god, which explains the outrage among the christians. they shudnt be outraged, cuz Jesus PBUH was a man.

Re: Da Vinci Code

This movie should be very interesting!

Re: Da Vinci Code

It portrays itself as being based in "fact", but the arguments are so tenuous the author couldn't write a serous treatise on the subject. He had to resort to fiction. The coward.

Re: Da Vinci Code

How would you feel if someone wrote a fictional story about Islam and some of its core beliefs as being "not real" Even though its fiction? Yeah..

Re: Da Vinci Code

was mohammad an actual person too, I mean was he God's messenger as a human?
