Culture in pakistan

Salam,

Well fellow pakistanis, i'm new to gupshup and there has been an issue that has plagued my mind since i was born. I'm sure every pakistani has felt this. Pakistanis have no sense of culture. I mean this is coming from a punjabi from bahawalpur. We as a country have only existed for about 50 years. We are not indians therefore we should have our culture, but a culture that is for the whole country. Our culture should unite us, not separate us. Balouchies hate punjabis, sindhis hate pashutans ect. We are not indians because we have a cultural differnce that's the reason they invented pakistan. We're not like inidans completley. The term desi is used for indians. But to me that term always applied to country-men. Des=country. We are not persians, but we do share some common things with them like poetry and hospitality. We're sure as hell not arabs, because we can say pepsi instead of "bebsi". To tell you the truth we are mix.We are all different. My ancestors are not all real punjabis, but some are. My family migrated from punjabi towns in india, and before that from jammu. My great grandfather knew persian, arabic and urdu. He was incredible because he was a "common" farmer. He led the village. i'm sure we're not indians then, but some of me is indian. There is an urge inside me to watch sharukh kahn..=), but I know i'm not completley indian. I might be from persia or some arab country. But i'm not arabic or persian. I'm PAKISTANI, and pakistanis sadly have no culture. We only have culture that divides us. It makes me angry. Do you people think pakistani culture will develop in time, or will we always be confused desis?

let us invent a new culture… :hehe:

There is only one solution to the entire problem.

Look to the reason why our country was first created, why we first seperated from India. And in that....lies all our answers and solutions.

:)

^
culture is not defined by religion alone....
there r many other factors that play important roles in developing of cultures....

and there is no way baluchi culture can be same as punjabi culture....

and i dont see any problems if different regions have different cultures....

you separated because you wanted to practise your religion without persecution from Hindu majority.,,and how is that related to your culture?

Salaam.

I could kind of relate.

When I was younger the image I had of Pakistani culture was that which is portrayed in Pakistani Dramas, Muslim, Roti-Eating, Cricket-Playing, Arabic-Named, Urdu-Speaking, Shalwar Kamiz-Wearing, Decent-Looking and moderately conservative. Whether it was someone from the Northern Areas or someone from interior Sindh they’d be portrayed the same except maybe the accent they spoke Urdu in or a slight difference in skin tone.

Call me naïve but I genuinely believed this to be the way all people back home are, I could quite comfortably relate to it and was a Kuttar-Pakistani, I got all my friends; Punjabis, Mirpuris, Mahajirs etc. to all start speaking Urdu and got them into all this Pakistaniyat, blasting out “Dil Dil Pakistan” at school to piss off all the Hyderabadis and Gujjus, (rub it in, look guys we got a country of our own and you're still stuck with the Hindus), you know the usual Brit born Paki-Kid mentality, I was so confident in it.

Then I got the Internet and found out there’s a world outside PTV, family and my school friends, all the petty arguments and moaning and groaning “haaey Punjabi ham SindhiyoN/BaluchiyoN pe zulm kar gaey” and Punjabis complaining “Mahajirs are imposing their language on us” and vice versa left me a bit disillusioned, opened my eyes a bit that we’re not all one big happy family and probably never will be, another thing which put me off is the Pakistani media which is getting so bayhayaa (self explanatory) and Indianised/Westernised (sari/dress etc.), I thought if this is truly representative of our culture, then what’s the point in Pakistan? We’re pretty much the same as Indians, Paki culture started seeming fake and I felt the need to identify with a proper ethnicity, of course Punjabi was the answer because both sides of the family are Punjabi speaking and from the Punjab, albeit partially of Pashtun descent [careful with them pics lad ;) :D], only thing which annoys me is the Bhangra songs about Jatt this and Jatt that, what does a non-Jatt Punjabi do if they want to sing along to that song?

You are right we are a mix but the foreign descent is almost always exaggerated and in some cases a blatant lie, we have got more local blood in Pakistan, no doubts about that. Don’t ever tell an Arab or Persian about your ancestry coz trust me you’ll get “besti”.

If it were possible I like armughal bhai's idea of creating/inventing our own distinct culture and to some extent we’ve been successful in this, at least in the Punjab the elder generation converse amongst themselves in Punjabi and wear their dhotis but with the kids they speak in Urdu and the younger generation wears Shalwar Kamiz which is heartening but Indian media is a very big hindrance in letting us go our own way, our people are hooked on Indian movies and Bhangra/Pop tunes by artists of Indian descent both here in Britain and back home, media is a very powerful tool and Pakistan should have stamped down on Indian media harder.

Another thing the Sindhis, Pashtuns and Baluchis seem a bit more reluctant to make progress and move with the times which sometimes makes me think we should stick to our own culture too, if nobody else changes with us, ham na yahaaN ke raheN ge na wahaaN ke and our efforts will go in vain, Punjab too has just as great a heritage (if not greater) than the other provinces, we have a very strong and colourful culture, we feel just as strongly about it but we’re making the effort to assimilate for Pakistan's sake and sacrificing our culture and language and I think the other less mortal (Joking) ethnicities ought to do the same.

Salaam.

Salam,

It's true arabs and iranians do tend to insult you if you tell them your ancestory, but the hell with them. I want to be pakistani. I guess there is no definition for pakistani, other than being born in pakistan. Moghuls invented a culture through persian rituals and some hindu ones also. I don't discriminate against arabs or iranians even though they have been less than brotherly to pakistanis. Punjab has rich culture true, but punjabis seem "jahil"-ignorant by the way they speak. No offense. Not all punjabis, but my fmaily at least. my mother is into the whole bhangara thing. I want everyone in pakistan to come together. i think we should send tons of resources to Balouchistan. The only thing is Balouchi tribes leaders are real haram zade. When i went to Balouchistan, i asked the tribesleader why he won't let one of the boys go to school? He said there is no need. They send their own kids to nice schools in england, but keep the tribe's children ignorant. I found this to be true when i went to balouchistan. The truth is punjabis don't send many things to balouchistan, and when they do the tribal leaders stop them. Not to interfere in their culture. I just want to fall back on something and say i'm pakistani for it. Pakistani zindabad is ok. and now that we have nukes, it makes us smarter than the rest of the middle east.(whose laughin now arabs and persians?) Well salam borthers and sisters, hopefully we will develop our culture someday, little by little.

Reza - where did you read that Culture is supposed to unite different people? Do you go to school? If so, please pick up a book from your library on basic reading.

:jhanda:

very harsh

Blade is correct, you can make your point without insulting someone.

Yeah, like insulting the entire Punjabi qoom by calling them Jahil. Grrrrrrrrrr…

:jhanda:

^ isnt that a redundant statment, calling a room "punjabi" would suffice.

no offence?? I dont know where this comes from only they way punjabi sounds make us all Punjabis so jahil?? I do take offence, you have offended majority of Paksitanis!

this is really funny!, if i speak Urdu then I am educated!!! and if speak more in english then i am considered more educated????

just few examples?? who won the only nobel for Pakistan?? wasnt he a Punjabi from Jhang?
i am very fulent in Punjabi and Urdu. I am persuing a PhD and have already 1 Masters in Computer sciences and 1 in telecommunications. yet i still speak punjabi with my parents, friends and family, and I will teach my kids Punjabi too. cause I love my language.
any language doesnt depict a persons ignorance FULL STOP!!

you must be a punjabi. Chak day phatay badshao :bhangra:

I din't mean for you guys to get upset. It's just that sometimes it doesn't sound like the most elegant language. i'm actually better at punjabi and even agree that urdu is a little feminite. I just wanted national pride. I have national pride, but what pride is there in people of my country fighting against eachother? There is no honour any I don't agree with all here that think it's ok, that some people hate other people. Stereotypes don't work well for me. Shak kills is punjabi and going for a phd and mashallah he is well educated. It seemed to him i was labeling all punjabis jahil, which is not true. People in my family speak punjabi and i'm proud of our language. In my family they sometimes say stupid things, such as "kuteh de push". I don't think it would impress anyone to be going around sayin that. I must admit sometimes it's pretty funny. Well i don't know what to say. I like punjabi and i didn't mean to offend anyone. It is best to say punjabi is a little crude at times. Basically all i want is, arabs invented al gebra, guptas the zero concept, persians were great in science. We made progress in the nuclear weapons, but it was already done. I guess i should set a role model for myself and do something for our cause as a nation. I can't rely on anything except our present and future, so that maybe all pakistanis can feel united as a country and be proud. That's all. Salam.

And Punjabis (at least Muslim/West) have nothing except maybe Bhangra and being able to fart the loudest. :rotfl:

I’ve been contemplating and I see where you’re coming from, we don’t really have any proper heroes/idols to look up to except fairy tale charecters from our own ethnicity like the Sikh Punjabis have their Gurus, their warriors etc. Maybe it would be better to be just Pakistani, it’ll sure widen our horizon and give us a wide variety of girls to choose from to marry instead of worrying about preserving our language and culture.

I take that back, pitty the Edit option doesn’t seem to be there, Pakistan is no identity, Punjabi is. :snooty:
