Cultural Differences

Here in lahore I have noticed that people prefere white or fair skin, I see all my mamy, chahies telling me to put this on my face, or to do that with my skin to make it lighter, because gori kuri soni lagdi way. Rishtay nahi atay…..pullease come on! Since when did people start sending rishtas only because the girl was gori chiti….And then in AZ all my friends used to get tanned and they just loved our brown skin…

Tea or Coffee? Definetly Coffee! My jeeju probably drinks about 8 or 9 cups or tea everyday for him its like water. Khane se pehlay chai khane kay baad chai….And I can’t even get a damn nice brewed cup of coffee. This other day I went to Dunkin Dounuts hoping I would smell some coffee, I did get some but it wasn’t my regular black decaf. Everyone here loves TEA. Some don’t like coffee saying its bitter others don’t even know how it tastes like…just plain divergence in preferences I guess…

The other day I was talking to my cousin I showed her a picture of christine she was the valadatorian of our class. I told my cousin how smart and brainny she was…She laughed at me sayin “smart aur yeh! dekha nahi kitni sooki hai”….I wasn’t talking about her appearance I was talking about her BRAIN….I guess in lahore smart is considered HOT or something….Like the other day this aunty goes “smart shoes rosh!” it sounded soo werid to me. So when I go out with friends or cousins I can’t say “look that a hot guy” I have to say “dekho dekho smart guy”……how peculiar?

Then about being having a patli kamar…My khala goes “uff eeesshwariya (not ashwariya but essshhhwariya) ko dekha hai devdas main kia patli kamar hai”, here men or others want a patli kamar unlike in NY where everyone wants a big booty…right?

Okay now in HS when I transferred to phoenix I noticed a big difference. Eventhough it was 110 outside all the girls had their hair down. Unlike in Jerz where they put them up all gel-ed up and take them out from sides to give it a messy look yet all classy. My friends would make fun of me when I put my hair up. They always bothered me and wanted my to put them down so I started to. It was in Lahore that I put my hair up in 3 years. Every girl here in going with a chauti with soo much tail thopafied..

Here I see all the girls wearing lipstick and no eyeliner or eye makup. Where as in HS just a lil lip gloss with nice matching eyemakeup was to be in fashion and to be all “cool”. People thing my blue eyemakep is way too much then some red (going out of my liplines) lipstick is okay….Why is that?

So do you agree with me?

cultural standards are always relative:(

I know LM. THere is a stark difference so there is no comparison. But hey u girl, u r smart enough. I mean brainy and good looking too. My sincere advice as an elderly soul ( though not that old :( ) not to try anything on ur beautiful skin here.

Abhi to begining hai , agai agai dekhain hot hai kya.

interestin and i totally agree,
after reading all uve writen i can say tht theres alot of difference between islamabad and lahore ,islamabad is where im from originally....

in isb they definitely know the diff betweeen being hot and smart...
coffee is used almost as much as tea.....
they'll rather use eyemakeup thn dark lipsticks
ppl do like fair skin but not to the extent tht they wont fall in lov with someone dark;)

A lot of people/relatives in Pakistan love to critique everything about you. Your hair, your skin, your clothes, to the point of being moonh phut, you just wanna shove it all back in their face as well, but nice as you are, you don't want to leave a bad impression either.

There was one time i was going to visit someone's house and i was planning to wear this really nice elegant white cotton ka suit with whit embroidery, and my cousins are like 'kiya hajj pe jaa rahi hoo' with and outburst of laughter. :-S I wore it anyway.

At the end, just be careful that you don't become like them in thinking, which i know won't happen, right rosh?

I know what you mean, I'm a Yemeni and most Yemenis like lighter skin ton I don't know why and prefer the other Arabs skin ton. Well, and with the other Arabs they always going tanning and say they like our skin ton.

i dont think wat ur cozns said was a big deal or that they were tryin to be bitchy, this stuff is commom between cozns, balke is se bhi ziada chalta hai.... bande ka dil bara hona chaahiye....

lol

It didn't imply that they were acting snotty, just that they were being critical by their own standards. I love my cousins, minus their opinions on certain things. I just think that they should keep those to themselves.

thats right sharara..sehar hai hi aisi..chotay dil wali :)

chotay dil wali<<

That's a first, but chaleiN aap baray dil walay khush rahein :p

Hur kissi ko wohi acha lagta hey jo unkey paas nahi hotta. Jo aunties gorri nai hottien unhey gori baho hi chaye hotti hey

So iss mey aissi kiya baat hey? Waisey mujhey chai, coffee dunnoun mey sey kissi sey mujhabbat nahi  waisey how come your brother in law = everyone?

Again a big big generalisation!!!

** Then about being having a patli kamar…My khala goes “uff eeesshwariya (not ashwariya but essshhhwariya) ko dekha hai devdas main kia patli kamar hai”, here men or others want a patli kamar unlike in NY where everyone wants a big booty…right? **

Thats a matter of choice, waisey bhi patley loug look better in ma humble opinion.

chotti? tail thapofied? where? Ummm aren’t hair cachers in big time?

Again a matter of choice. I think yaha jis ka jo dil karta hey wo wohi karta hey. One of my friends was the only girl who use to put eye shades in the whole class and no one ever bothered her bulkey we all thought she looked great.

** So do you agree with me? **

Agree with what? that cultural differences exist? Yes I do. But I don’t agree with your observations, everything is generalised big time.

Fanta Putar I am in that same lahore that you are, or maybe you just need to get out more and see whats out there, than to just stay home on GS :hehe:

Okay about generalization ofcourse they are general differences, abhi I can’t give you specific ones, agar woh dayne beth gai to bus phir to novel he likhna pare ga. Maybe they seem general to you but for a girl that has just changed her whole life style uss kay liye they would be BIG ONE NOT vague ones.

LM, I hear ya and this is what I have to say in regards to that:

Everyone is a f'in critic, they can dish it but can't take it

o beeta jee i go out all the time and i really don't see these things. I mean aik saal pehley bhi there were hardly any girls with tail sey bharey baal ( 1 or 2 exceptions are always there ofcourse) and am not saying key yaha chai coffee sey ziada popular nahin but you can always make your own coffee no? :D Aur jahan tuk taluk hey make-up ka tou that has always been a matter of personal choice :) Wo bhi tou loug hien na ub jo shikal duperey laal blush-on thoup key nikul partey hien. Unhey koi kuch kehta hey :-D

Waisey apus ki baat hey sohna munda dekh key koi hae kitna smart hey nai kehta :-D Sub Hot ya cool hi kehtey hien :p

Waisey the topic of the post says "cultural diferences" and we all know that they exist. If all societies were same there would be no fun. So what is the purpose of this thread? that there shouldn't be any cultural differences or you should be allowd to live the way u want? ummm in later case I think the problem of accepting a 'wierdo' is every where. 'When in Rome do as romans do" <--- ye kissi Pakistani ney tou nahin kaha tha mera khiyal hey ;-)

OKAY JUST FOR THE RECORD I am not criticising or anything. I just wrote this post because all the above that I mention happening in pak is way different than what I was aware of in AZ....THAT IS ALL.........Don't take it personally. I am not attacking anyone....I mean fanta I think your reply made far more sense than the others because it provided me with some new info......I mean who better than a true lahori telling me about her culture, right!?
