I think our Desi obsession MIGHT be from two sources... Now this is just a theory so stick with me on this...
Initially, its started with the Aryan invasion of India 4000 odd years ago...
The Aryans pushed the dark skinned Dravidians into the South and imposed the Caste system in order to maintain what the figured was their superior gene pool. This train of thought was passed down through the generations, until it became so ingrained into psyche of the comman Indian, that they assumed light skin was better without even knowing why...
When Muslims invaded, they mixed with local populations and inherited this same prejudice, without even knowing the reason.
This prejudice was later compounded by the arrival of the British. No one can deny the fact that the British were highly prejudice.
There policies ingrained a strong sense of insecurity in the minds of local peoples. The Whites were suddenly the superior race while the dark skinned natives were simply servents.
This sense of insecurity coupled with the ancient prejudices towards dark skin have led us to where we are today. Where every Desi feels light skin is someting of beauty while Dark skin is otherwise.
