>>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Ok so I plan to take a month off and see what America is all about …that includes all the tourist destinations but also some of those places which are worth seeing but do not always make it to your travelling brochures !

So I need help from fellow guppies who maybe living in those areas to advise about :

***1) Best hotels to stay - plz remember i’m not asking 5 star hotels as they are overpriced but i’m not gonna stay at some cheap motel either…I need something affordable but safe and livable, maybe 3-4 star hotels ***

2) Car rental companies that are known to anyone or other suggested means of transport around the particular city.

3) Suggested MUST SEE places in that city.

4) Any travelling tips from past experience.

5) Suggested flights : which to avoid which not to depending on experience with the particular airline…any ideas abt getting cheaper tkts or planning the routes.

So far these are the main cities i’ve decided on but any suggestions are welcome.

Los Angeles

San Francisco

San Diego

Las Vegas

Chicago

Florida

New York

Washington

If there other cities I should incorporate do please advise.

How many days are enough to enjoy each place as I don’t wanna feel rushed but at the same time do not wanna exceed the budget.

HELPPPPPPPPPP !!!

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Seattle. :snooty:

LA is close to San Diego so you could combine the two really. If you have time, I say take the train that runs up the West coast. It’s supposed to be awesome.

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Niksik......Seatle it is then.......i'll let you plan the Seatle leg of the tour :D

I was thinking of renting a car and driving down rather than the train so i can make stops , take pix enjoy the views.......however would you lemme knoe which trains , Amtrak or are there particular trains that are part of tour packages?

Chicago

The Magnificent Mile (http://www.themagnificentmile.com): Your shopping paradise, the stretch of Scenic Michigan Avenue is lined with brand name shops ranging from Chanel to Apple.

The Taste of Chicago (If you come in July, this is one event you do not want to miss. You can literally taste the whole of chicago in one place along the lakefront. Combine the view with food, followed by a short boat ride that takes you onto Lake Michigan and i believe within the City’s waterways.) Taste of Chicago and More
Staying places: The city’s Downtown is full of Hotels such as Allerton, Allegro, Hilton (5 mins from lake), Sheraton, Marriott, Intercontinental. You name it, it’s all there. Chicago Downtown Hotels
Sightseeing: There are tour trolleys that take you around the city on a landmark ride. http://www.coachusa.com/chicagotrolley/

Walking: Millennium Park is the place to be, and then you can walk down Magnificent Mile and check out the Art Gallery as well. http://www.millenniumpark.org/

Entertainment: Chicago is big on Broadway shows. Infact the movie Chicago was based in Chicago, staged in the threatre called Chicago. It is one of the most well-known threatres in the city, there are other places as well such as the Cadillac Threatre. Plays are usually running several nights a week. http://www.broadwayinchicago.com/

Time required to see it all: Sky’s the limit. I would say 5 days maybe sufficient if you plan to devote one day to each activity.

PS: Devon Avenue is Chicago’s Mini India/Pakistan.

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Wow thanks Tegz !

i’ll chk out the links when i get home …howver any hotels U urself might have stayed in and recommend and an idea of the price ?

Secondly would you recommend renting a car or is it easier n cheaper to get abt the city in buses ?

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

I was thinking of abt a 3 day stayover in FL .

But if I visit Disney in LA then maybe i can just avoid FL altogether , not sure though ! Any other places in FFL that one shouldn't miss out on ?

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Chicago’s most convenient system of transportation is Public Tranpo. You can literally go from one part of the city to the other w/out the hassle of driving/parking. Parking in downtown chicago is a major pain, and charges can range anywhere from $12/hour to $25/hour.

An unlimited Weekly CTA pass will run you about $25 and you can use it on Bus or Rapid Transit/Train. Chicago’s Blue-Line will connect you from Downtown to O’Hare International. Orange Line will connect you from Downtown to city’s second largest airport Midway International.

Plan and time your trip, and you will not find yourself waiting for the desired bus/train endlessly.

I would recommend Intercontinental, as i have heard great things about it. But i would go for the best value one, they’re all really good. Most are located in downtown and minutes away from everything you’d want to explore anyways.

Most downtown hotels range $200+/daily. (unfortunately) lol

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

hmm.. why don't you get amtrack ticket ?...

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

i think florida disney world much better than LA as its new. its up to u. other than that florida has beaches.

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Sheyn - I would do by road one way and then fly back. It is loooong trip and by the end you'll be exhausted.

Where r u starting your trip from?

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Disney Orlando is much better than Disney LA .. but you can do both, Sheyn. But girl, I hope you are not planing to drive from east coast to west coast. That is going to be a disaster.

You need to divide the country into 4 segments. Fly to the base city of every segment, rent a car, drive around to all the cities of that area, come back to base city and fly back to your home town. Then start all over again.

Or you can fly from base city to base city, and rent a car there.

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

No , i'm definitely not driving cross country .......lol

I'm gonna take a flight to CA then do a road trip through all the adjoining cities maybe and then again fly to the next destination and so forth.

I'd like to start on the West Coast and work back to East coast.

So any hotels in any of those places that you've used urself that are affordable and upto standards ?

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Thx Teggy , i’ll look into it. I’d prefer the Intercon too as I don’t wanna compromise on living places especially at the end of a tiring day !

Amtrak from where to where ?

I don’t wanna see everything as a blur.

And the Amrtrak tkts seem pricier than just taking a flight .

I’m gonna fly from Philly to CA then plan it so i cover everything on the way back.

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

any of the choice hotel chains are pretty neat, safe, clean and affordable

Hotels, Rooms, Reservations, Hotel Lodging, Motels - Choice Hotels

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

What about the slums of Houston? Now thats a sight to see and I know them all. Cant go at night since you can get shot there quick.
Other than that Houston got nothing to offer.

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<

Re: >>> Cross Country Tour of the US <<<
