CrockPot Recipes

Ladies,

Ive got a crockpot…never used one before.

I need Desi and American recipes for my crockpot please!

A crock-pot is basically a slow cooker, right? So, you can try making recipes that require a longer time to cook such as stews and soups. I've read that nihari is one of those dishes that cook for hours.....so that's an option.

Re: CrockPot Recipes

Haleem. Do the bhuno-ing of the meat in the regular pot. When that part is done, transfer into crockpot, add dals and grains and water and slow cook on low for 10 hours. When everything is done, pour tarka.

Re: CrockPot Recipes

Do you like roast beef/pot roast? I made it IN THE CROCKPOT once. We finished it in like two days and my hubby wanted me to make again immediately!

It's easy. Get a 2-3 pound pot roast. Marinate with whatever you like (I use vinegar, garlic, ginger, some italian herbs, salt, pepper, red pepper, and olive oil). Poke holes (I usually use a knife) in it as much as you can and massage to get the juices inside the roast. Marinate for a few hours or over night.

Place roast in slow cooker. Add chopped onions and fresh herbs (I like rosemary), and any other veggies you like to season the water around it. Cover in water, and let cook! On my slow cooker, I cook on high and it takes about 4 hours. Comes out really nice and tender. No concerns about it drying out. You can broil it in the over at the end, if you want it to be a little browned. Make the gravy by stirring the liquid in a small saucepan and adding cornstarch until desired consistency.

I've also made stews, chopped beef stir fried briefly in flour before adding to pot, then add potatoes, carrots, whatever veggies and seasoning you like. And let it be!

Re: CrockPot Recipes

^ that roast sounds amazing, sahar! i’m definitely gonna try that.
what kind of meat cut do you ask for at the grocers?

i make chili in my slow cooker- its deeelicious!
It’s Chili by George!! - All Recipes
this recipe has won competitions for my friend’s who’ve used it, and i always, always get rave reviews for it.
the only changes i’ve made is to watch the chili powder quantity and adjust to what you eat, and i use a can of black beans instead of pinto beans.

Re: CrockPot Recipes

^ I just asked the butcher for a cut that would work for pot roast. I don't know what kind of cut it was. Make sure to consider the size/shape of the slow cooker!

Re: CrockPot Recipes

Anyone done good old fashioned alloo ka salan?

Re: CrockPot Recipes

the thing with that is, the aloo can get really overdone- so if you plan on leaving it for 7-8 hours, do the lowest setting.

Pot roast is beef right? what kind of cut would u ask for, at a desi halal butcher shop? will they even know what "pot roast" cut is ?

btw...is a slow cooker necessary? can it do things that an oven can't do? (i know everyone so sick of my oven)

Re: CrockPot Recipes

^ I usually make it in the oven. But tried the slow cooker the last couple of times, and it worked well.

I went to an Irani Halal Butcher shop and they knew. I think desis would know too. It's worth asking. Yes, it's beef. But not sure what to call the cut.

Re: CrockPot Recipes

^ i'm gonna go to a persian meat shop tomorrow too and see what they have. their butcher is very knowledgeable about other cuts, so hopefully he'll know. in the supermarket, the pre-spiced roast beef said it was sirloin tip, but it wasn't halal so i didn't buy it.

That's what I would think, but in stews it turns out fine.

Re: CrockPot Recipes

hrm.. give it a shot? i guess maybe don't cut up the aloo's so small then- maybe leave bigger pieces and that would help them from not turning into mush.
i usually use my pressure cooker for aloo gosht- totally yummy and it done in 20 minutes!

Re: CrockPot Recipes

ooh, sara, lookit! i found an answer (of sorts) for roast beef cuts-

roast beef *
Notes:
* Several cuts are well suited to oven roasting. The most elegant choice is a tenderloin roast, which is lean and tender, but very expensive. A rib roast (sometimes called a prime rib roast) isn’t as lean and tender, but it’s juicier and more flavorful. A good compromise between the two would be a rib-eye roast, which is basically a boneless, low-fat rib roast. Other candidates for roast beef are a top loin roast, top sirloin butt roast, tri-tip roast, round tip roast, and rump roast. Don’t assume that anything with “roast” in its name will work as roast beef. Some roasts are intended for pot roast recipes, for it takes hours of cooking in a liquid to make them tender enough for civilized consumption.

dontcha just love the interweb?

Re: CrockPot Recipes

Can we revive this thread?
I’ve made western recipes like pot roast, bbq chicken and beef in my slow cooker, and I’ve been loving it.
I’d like to try desi meals now. Not fancy stuff like haleem, I’m looking for daals and karahi and everyday meals that I can just put in the slow cooker and forget about for a few hours.
