Well, the Taliban were criminals themselves, so obviously when one criminal group controls everything it will suppress all other criminal rivals.

yep thats true for example they virtually eleminated drug trade, they are fanatics alright but compared to northie drug lords they are lesser of the two evil.
Like (RAWA)Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan once said.. During Taliban rule when we went out without burqa we use to get beaten up now we simply get raped... What an improvement!!

I think women who went out without Burqa during the Taliban era would get alot more then just a beating.. But yeah, its terrible how Afghanistan goes from bad to less worse and its considered an improvement.

Oria Maqbool Jan...head of the Punjab archealogical department, a pre-eminant intellecutal and scholar on numerous occasions referred to his own anecdotal experience while visiting Afghanistan during the taliban time...according to him whole warehouses full of goods and food were left unguarded during Taliban's time, because the law and order was enforced and people knew the consequence of breaking the law...

This seems to be the norm in Afghan society... Even in the liberal 70's, most of the women in wester style clothing were of the educated city dwellers of Kabul, while women in the villages were very conservative... There is a famous National Geographics Magazine which I have from 1970's, in which you see women wearing knee length skirts!
Sadly, Most of the educated elites were killed, kicked out, or ran of to Europe, only to be replaced by the uneducated and consevative village dwellers, many of whom I would suppose were also strongly involved in the mujahideen resistance.
So the uneducated Islamist conservative were given the ascendancy while the educated liberals were suppressed.

How do you know all the whored up leg baring skirt sporting liberal city dwellers were educated...I've seen plenty of Pakistan liberal nangay of the paindo extraction with no educational credentials..

the exodus of the educated ppl from afghanistan was quite massive. I was reading some stats on it a while back about the number of professors and doctors etc and how it went down quite drastically.
Not sure if they are planning to go back anytime soon either, I mean afghans who moved to pak dont want to go back, why would afghans who moved to the west would.

lol.. Thats true also... But usually, people who tend to be liberal, also tend to be well off, and thus have better access to education.
Although, your right, Education doesnt always equal respectability...
