[41:9] Say (O Muhammad SAW): “Do you verily disbelieve in Him Who created the earth in two Days and you set up rivals (in worship) with Him? That is the Lord of the Alam” (mankind, jinns and all that exists). [41:10] He placed therein (i.e. the earth) firm mountains from above it, and He blessed it, and measured therein its sustenance (for its dwellers) in four Days equal (i.e. all these four ‘days’ were equal in the length of time), for all those who ask (about its creation). [41:11] Then He istaw (rose over) towards the heaven when it was smoke, and said to it and to the earth: “Come both of you willingly or unwillingly.” They both said: “We come, willingly.” [41:12] Then He completed seven heavens in two Days and He made in each heaven its affair. And We adorned the nearest (lowest) heaven with lamps (stars) to be an adornment as well as to guard (from the devils by using them as missiles against the devils). Such is the Decree of Him the All-Mighty, the All-Knower.
I am a bit confused the earth was created in first two days [41-9] , and according to [41-12] our sun or as scientific name “sol” was created in 5th and 6th day.
how can you make a planet without a star?
if you have not made stars yet where the material for the planets came from?
and how can you have all the rest of the creations on the earth on the 4th day when the sun was not created yet?
please these are some serious questions, and all I ask for reasonable answers.
God forgive me if I am asking something which I should not.
Just read these Ayas for one purpose. To realize that "long long time" ago, Allah created these worlds. Days in these ayas could be "phases" or "stages". Do not confuse these terms with "24 hour day" of our times.
As for as the exact time line is concerned, read good books on planetary physics. Do not use Quran as a book of science.

There are many possible ways to interpret this set of verse, but the most important thing to realize is that it is allegorical, and ment to convey Allah's supremacy (poetically represented by heaven and earth responding to His commands).
Antibol is right about the "day" not being a day. A day in such sense used to represent an indefinite, "long" period of time.
There is no mentioning of the creation of time, so I doubt we can sequence these events in any meaningful manner...
41:12 mentions stars in the plural. Most human languages differentiate between the sun and the stars (even though the sun is the star). Therefore, when I read that verse I think of the stars far far away, rather than the sun (the word for sun beign different in arabic from star)
Stars continue to be made after planets. Even today, new stars (and planets) continue are being formed. Telescope image show protostars.
I'm curious as to who added in the phrase in brackers in verse 12 - (from the devils by using them as missiles against the devils) . My understanding is that thigns in brackets aren't part of the original arabic.
Who knows how many meteor impacts on earth have been prevented because material was sucked into the gravity well of a distant star millions of years ago that would have otherwise ploughed into earth....
as is the common theory, a huge mass exploded, the gaseous material in it formed the sun and the stars, and the mass of it formed the planets moving around these stars....
so perhaps earth here refers to that big planet (?) which existed before sun and other stars....
^ the roots of the mountains sometimes r deeeper than the height of the mountain above the surface of the earth....
which means they r very difficult to move....
landslide does not actually mean that the mountain moved....
Still the sequence is not right as my above stated questions.
As I said earlier, Quran is a book for spiritual aspect for our lives. So take it in that context.
As far as time lines are concerned, go read some physics books. In fact I'd highly suggest paying a visit to local science museum. Even though most of the things are geared towards kids, you may still learn something. We all do!
^when carpet is spread out it becomes flat, mountains do move when there is an earthquake read this:
Oat Mountain in the Santa Susana range just north of California's San Fernando Valley jumped several centimeters during the 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Los Angeles on Jan. 17, said a Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist.
Other locations, including some communities, also were jerked into new positions, said Dr. Andrea Donnellan, a JPL geophysicist.
The 1,103-meter-high (3,618-foot) mountain jumped up 38 centimeters (14.8 inches). **It also moved north 16 centimeters (6.2 inches) and west 14 centimeters (5.5 inches).
Movement of 15 inches of somthing as tall as 40,000 inches (3,600 feet), can hardly be termed as jumping. It is like a 6 feet (72 inches) tall person moves 0.027 inches, and you say wow! What a jump. Man! you deserve an olympic gold medal in high jump. hahhahha! Funny that you have such a great command on English language and science.
As many above said, take is as guidelines and these verses express the supremacy of God, Almighty. It is important and recommended to seek knowledge. However, when there's no clear answer available, it is recommended that we accept things as they are said in the Quran and wait patiently for the Creator to explain us on the last day. Islam means submission without questioning. There's so much beyond scientific explanation. There are lot of things that we come to say, why, oh why? But no one can satisfy our quest, for those times, God said, wait until you hear from the All Majestic Himself.
^so typical of bigots like you to start attacking someone personally when you can't come up with a logical argument.I did'nt write that anyway its a news item taken from a web site.
Thank you for your comments. Well, I did say that Quran puts emphasis on seeking knowledge, and explore the universe. Sure go head and question phenomenons, or practices around you but you can't question Quran, that is the only perfect book on this earth. Yes, strive to understand it, sure!
when u "spread" the word, do u make the word flat????
^lol.man you are a genius.thats what quran is saying spread it out like carpet. How did the word carpet get in there if it is not talking about spreading it in any particular way.
