Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

as far as observation is concerned, i've 63 first cousins masha Allah and a lot of them have married their cousins and i haven't seen any of their children with even a mild medical problem. they are sharp kids.

all the arguments fail when Allah says you CAN marry your cousin. so, my argument is:

you have the choice to marry anyone you like irrespective of whatever relationship you have with the girl or NOT to marry whosoever you don't want to

BUT

please don't say that how can i marry my cousin because she is 'LIKE' my sister or because of the medical problems my children may have.

well, she may be LIKE but is NOT your sister...period!

this goes contrary to Allah's command that you can marry anyone except the ones Allah forbade you to marry AND cousins are NOT one of them.

that's it!

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

1) If there is a divorce, its gonna be really weird as u are still going to have them in your life its gonna suck
2) there are certain diseases, like cystic fribrosis, where if 1 parent has it its ok, but if both have it, the kid will be really sick. These diseases are through families. so if a cousin has it, the other will too.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

How can you be against it? It's allowed in Islam rather Islam tells us to look first in your relatives for marriage. If anybody is against this then he's surely going against Islam.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Absolutely correct. It's all about how strong your belief on Allah.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

In Islam it's allowed but not preferred..

One case of cousin marriage in a family isn't going to carry much risk but obviously that risk will multiply the more it happens..

Excessive cousin marriage is discouraged just as other halal behaviours done in excess also are (eg eating too much meat isn't healthy even tho eating meat itself is obviously halal).. Just because something is allowed doesn't mean we should go overboard with it and throw common-sense out of the window..

There are a LOT of things which are allowed in Islam but done too much they cause us harm..

In families where cousin marriages are the norm and happen too often there is a much higher risk of genetic defects.. The scholars themselves say this..

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

where does it say its not preferred?

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Oh you want to bring Islam into this?

Fact: Islam encourages and promotes marriages outside of tribes and across races in fact.

Fact: correct me if I'm wrong but all or most of the Rasul's wives were not related to him. And I don't think he had his daughter married to a cousin.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Can you quote where in the Quran or the 6 books of hadith are muslims told "to look first in your relatives for marriage."

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

O really? who wasl Ali (RA) then? You see, PCG, it kinda invalidates any valid arguments you make too....

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

...... Yea, you're wrong. -_-

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

In the Cosmopolitan and the Daily Mail.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

This is an example of why guppans shouldn't use islamic references and their misunderstandings as basis for arguments in life1.......

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Hazrat Fatima (RA) was not the only daughter of Rasool SAWS to marry a cousin. I have read that his other daughters also married cousins.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Look it up on Sunnipath..

Also FULL references (supporting hadiths and rulings) have been posted here on GS before.. Use your brain and do a search..

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Quick reference:

The Islamic view is that while marriage between cousins is permissible, it is preferable to choose a marriage partner from outside one’s family. We have to distinguish between what is permitted and what is advocated. Some clans restrict marriages to amongst their kin only – a practice far from what is advocated. It is worth stressing here that when marriage of cousins is repeated over several generations, they are bound to have more effects on children.

By permitting such marriages Islam does not encourage them. It advocates the cementing of social relations through marriages between totally unrelated families.

**The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once told one of his Companions to choose a wife from a tribe different to his, and then to choose for his son a wife from a third tribe, and to seek for his second son a girl from yet another tribe. **

Preferring this course of action, Islam nevertheless permits marriage between cousins because it meets a social need.”

Sorry in advance for those who are oh so sensitive and offended by it..

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

He was referring to the hasty and incorrect assumption that Rasool SAW did not marry any of his daughters to cousins. I only knew of Hazrat Fatima's marriage to a relative, but after searching on Google today I learned that his SAW's other daughters (all of them) were married to cousins. However, I have also read that while it's permissible, it's preferable to marry outside to expand social connections.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

^Oh ok.. I assumed he was asking who said cousin marriage isn't preferred..

Is that what you call hadith and scholars now?

Instead of blindly following culture best start reading.. you might actually learn something..

(And I have no problem with cousin marriage if that's what the couple themselves want)

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Ok great that's his daughter. He himself did not marry any cousins.

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

Yes you're right Quran and hadith doesn't quote anything specific to this topic so I should've said it's our scholars who says rather Islam but still there is nothing wrong with it because they said it based on facts that it's preferable to marry your cousins because you know their background and each and everything about them. I disagreed with you because you said you're against it and it's like brother and sister relation, so can you prove it first?

Re: Cousin marriages- yay or nay in this day and age.

the Prophet himself (peace and blessings be upon him) married his first cousin, Zaynab bint Jahsh (Allah be pleased with her), as she was the daughter of the Prophet’s paternal aunt Umaymah.
