Wasim Akram has a ream of records under his belt already, but today, during Pakistan’s Pool A match against Holland at Paarl, he reached a milestone that few could ever have believed possible. When he bowled Nick Statham for 0, to reduce Statham’s average to less than 7, Wasim became the first bowler to reach 500 one-day international wickets.
He is likely to remain at the top of the pile for quite some time. Only one other bowler has managed even 400 wickets – Wasim’s old sparring partner and current captain, Waqar Younis – and of the posse of players competing for third place on the table, only Muttiah Muralitharan, Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble have managed as many as 300.

Wasim joins Courtney Walsh as the only man to take 500 wickets in a single form of international cricket. And, like Walsh, Wasim’s longevity is a major factor in his success. He began his career against New Zealand at Faisalabad way back in November 1984, and has since played 354 ODIs, another record.

But Wasim’s achievement is all the more remarkable, given that the odds are loaded against bowlers in one-day cricket. He has, after all, a maximum of 60 deliveries per match in which to make an impact, and has to contend with fielding restrictions, strict leg-side wides and solitary bouncers per over.

At the height of his career, Wasim’s fearsome speed and devastating swing made light of all these handicaps. He picked up a brace of hat-tricks at Sharjah in 1989-90, and then, during the World Cup final against England in 1991-92, he bowled two of the most celebrated deliveries of all time – those searing, dipping, reversing zingers that accounted for Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis in consecutive balls.

Wasim is the most-capped player in World Cup history, having played in each of the last five tournaments. In addition, he is the only man to have taken 50 wickets.

Wasim hasn’t exactly been a slouch in Test cricket either. In 104 Tests, he has taken 414 wickets and lies in seventh spot on the all-time list. Add the two together, however, and Wasim is streets ahead of his nearest rival - that man Waqar again - making him the most prolific wicket-taker in the history of international cricket.

Well done Wasim. It's been a privelege to watch now go out and do it one more time against Sachin, Ganguly and co.

Hopefully, Wasim will show us some magic against India.

**Wasim lost sleep over wicket record **](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)

Wasim Akram admitted to suffering nerves and sleepless nights going into Pakistan’s World Cup clash with Holland on 499 one-day international wickets.

But he needn’t have worried. The all-rounder struck with just his seventh ball of Holland’s reply to Pakistan’s 253 for nine to become the first player to reach the 500 mark in one-dayers.

Afterwards, amid the celebrations, he revealed he had worried so much about attaining the magic 500 that he had spent a restless night in his hotel room prior to the game.

“I felt a lot of pressure; in fact, I could hardly sleep last night. I was as nervous as any young sportsman ahead of a big game,” said a beaming Wasim, who dedicated his achievement to everyone who had supported him through the years.

“My career has been a rollercoaster ride with lost of ups and downs but it has been all worth it. I have enjoyed every second of it, even the through the controversies. It has been all worth it.”

The 36-year-old paid tribute to the leadership of Imran Khan and Javed Miandad - the senior players in the team when he joined it in 1984.

“They gave me, as a youngster, the perfect guidance. They taught me that hard work and determination is necessary and they also showed my that passion for the game is vitally important.”

Pakistan captain Waqar Younis also paid tribute to his fellow fast bowler.

“I just want to salute him. It is an outstanding achievement for him and for Pakistani cricket. I don’t see anybody else bettering his achievement,” Waqar said.

However, the Pakistani captain was less effusive about his team’s performance.

“I am not disappointed but I would have liked some of our batters to spend more time in the middle,” said Waqar, who felt his side should have made 300 against the Dutch.

He also expressed his faith in Inzamam-ul Haq, whose previous two innings have lasted a combined three balls with no runs, and said he believed the prolific batsman still had had a huge role to play in the World Cup.

“He is one our best players and has performed brilliantly for Pakistan in the past,” added Waqar. “Hopefully, he will get some more runs in the next game against India.”

Pakistan now have to win their remaining two Pool A games against India and Zimbabwe to stand any chance of qualification for the Super Six stage.

Losing my patience now
 Waqar keep on saying this after each and every game. He still needs 52 runs to get to 9,000 mark.

Inzimam is going to play against India??? :mad2: :mad3:
