I was prescribed Metformin for hormonal problem but i didnt take it cuz b4 geting any medicine i have 2 do a research on it n i did on net n found out abt its side effects so i didnt take it. I dont know wat yr medical problem is and how imp it is for u 2 treat it with this medicine....but ya if u r nt happy with it maybe consult with some other doctor too.
I am also taking it for hormonal issues..PCOS as my doc told me.
Almost every doc that I go to prescribes this medicine for me. I was also reluctant to start it but over a year of same prescriptions from different doctors convinced me to go ahead with it. It has done some good too, so to speak, I lost some weight and was back on a regular cycle.
my best friend had severe side effects from metformin so she stopped taking it. she has PCOS too and she needed it to regulate her insulin so that she could conceive but in the end, she was suffering blackouts and it was just dangerous, so she stopped.

ya it is prescribed alot as i read on the net but i was too scared 2 take it...my case wasnt that bad so i guess it was nt a must for me...but m gonna have my tests done again 2 c if i really need any medicine at all...it really irritates me when u have 2 take such medicines for curing somethin cuz that means u mite end up getting something even worse and thats nt fair:( btw read up on the net as i remember at some forum people shared their tips as to how 2 make the side effects less severe.
Glucophage is supposed to cause like dizziness and stuff like that, i mean some people get it worse than others. I dunno about upset stomachs, I wouldnt be surprised if it does do tha
well metformin is also used to control blood sugars in patients with diabetes so it can lower your blood sugars causing light headedness etc.. now if it gives you an upset stomach then you should take it after a big meal.. that'll help stablilize your blood sugars as well so at least they don't plunge.
it's a very commonly prescribed med and sometimes companies are legally required to list all their side effects..it really doesn't mean you'll get them all. my dad's on it for his diabetes and has never had problems.
as for the mood swings..they're likely more due to the hormonal imbalance then the metformin i suppose..
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after the birth of my son but didnt take it seriously.
last year i was diagnosed with PCOS and started taking metformin but cause of so many side effects stopped .
Now i am taking Glucophage , Birth control pills and Eltroxin (for hypothyroidism)
I have a normal cycle now but oh too many other side effects .have had upset stomch for so many weeks .it is getting better now .but yeah mood swings and nausea is there .also I am really, really tired ,always exhausted :(
i was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism after the birth of my son and i m taking levothyroxine for it. i m also having tiredness, exhaustion most of the time.
mm...i also suffered from pcos and yes it really sucks. i was also pescribed metformin but then switchover to clomid( clomiphene). For PCOS, metformin may be a possible therapy, but the typical first line therapy for anovulation is clomiphene.

I am trying to loose some weight so can't go for that option but it did give me an idea. I have included banana in my diet. It's been two days and things seem to be better stomach-wise, lets see if it continues...

Hmm that's different from what my doc told me. She said my PCOS will be better AFTER I have baby as my hormoes will be regularized , din't know you can get PCOS after having a baby.
PCOS does suck in so many other ways as well, like loosing hair and getting hair where you'd least want them..
I wish I'd wake up one day and it's gone, just like that!!

As far as I know Clomid is a short term medicine and is basically to trigger ovulation as you mentioned but never heard of it as a long term treatment for PCOS.
medical treatment of pcos is tailored to the patients goal under these categories
restoration of fertility
treatment of acne and hirusitism
treatment of irregular mensturation and prevention of endometrial hyperplasia andendometrial cancer
many women find metformin to be helpful.
clomiphene citrate and metformin are the principle treatments for infertility. both are effective but in the largest trial todate clomiphene is most effective.many specialist continue to reccomend metformin which increases ovulaion.metformin s a rational choice for women in which significant insulin resistence is diagnosed while clomiphene works through a different mechanism and does not effect insulin resistance.
hi Ayesha... I googled clomiphene after reading your post and the next time i visit my doc I'll ask her about its continuous use...
I did undergo 2 cycles of clomid though but that was for 5 days beginning form the third day of my cycle. Anyways I read Clomid increases the risk of ovarian cancer so please check that out before you continue to use it for a prolonged period..
Now i have another problem and i am blaming Glucophage for that.
My skin has become so dry, itchy , red and flaky maybe cause the medicne is working as I heard that changes in hormone levels can cause dry skin .
Mehroo .. Try taking it with milk, maybe it'll help
My stomach has been much better since the last few days and the only thing I've done different is increased the interval between two doses (though not intentionally, just by chance). It used to be 5-6 hrs and now it is almost 10-11 sometimes 12 hrs. People with stomach issues try increasing the interval and see if it helps.
