cooking for the first time at in-laws...

woww corrupt angel daal and chawal i'm sure they loved it lol daal and chawal is hard, i think its so hard to bring out a good flavor in daal!

a lot of people seem to have made chicken salan dishes but still a lot of variety

i wonder if lasagna or burgers is appropriate lol cuz thats all i would know!

heheehe dat was the same case with me as well...my MIL cooked that...and then i didnt cook anything afterwards being new bride...i too stayed for only one month (hardly) and then went to my husband's place ...then we came on barri eid and at that time i cooked chinese...and afterwards no chance of cooking anything there....because its so hard to cook in pak...esp..the oven with which i am comfortable here may not give me the same COMFORT there...so i avoid using oven(doing stuff like baking etc.) at in-laws...dont take risk at all! 2ndly its hot like hell in the kitchens...

lol

In my experience, paki ovens r temperamental, the thermostat doesnt seem to work on the same scale as here. They r scary.

Cheese, i have tried a few cheeses in Pakistan, and haven't found a cheddar that is really like cheddar, but some are quite ok for cooking.

I was surprised to find that you can get vanilla flavouring in pakistan for desserts, but u have to look for it.

Lasagne's are SHOW OFF dishes in pakistan, so its a great skill! Burgers are great too, save them a fortune on take outs!

Re: cooking for the first time at in-laws...

i made lasagne, and fries for the ones that didnt want asian and chicken salan for the MIL, and made roti first time, which were soooo small, still are mind u haha. plus it was rozay aswell so they all did iftari at mine.

for dessert i made a chocolate/strawberry/cream gateau, which only after eating everyone realised i had made it at home. they thought i had bought it from shops. my proud cake taht was

in my in laws kitchen im so clumsy, i drop everythin and cant even cut a plate of salad without looking like i cant do anythin, but in my own kitchen im 'a great chef' as my husband calls me....

I found vanilla/almond flavoring at a shop where they didn't even carry shan masalas.. I had no idea it was that common back home!!!

In fact I was surprised to see lots of things that are available there.. betty crocker cake mix, Kraft cream cheese, Del Monte Prunes, Ocean Spray cranberry juice, frozen pizzas and stuff with the US brands!! When it came to cooking, I never had any problem fnding something that I would have used here in the US..There is a Costco-like wholesale supermarket MAKRO at shahra-e Faisal (there are two more in Karachi but this was closest to my place)... you find EVRYTHING there.. I found General Mills cinnamon toast crunch cereals there.. what else could I ask for!!!

and by the way, made bhindi gosht with the help of my FIL since he was the only person home at that time.. it turned out greattttt!!! there were two main problems though, I made 2 kg of bhindi with 2 kg of gosht for three people and my FIL sprinkled this "maithi" thing on top and it tasted a bit weird but still hubby, FIL and I ate it for lunch/dinner and then gave the rest to neigbors since I wanted to try matr pulao next :D

so true...i have seen Glad trash bags too....!!...the big ones...30 gallons or sth like that...i mean who uses them in Pakistan....!!

Re: cooking for the first time at in-laws...

OMG! i cant cook to save my life(pakistani food tht is)...i have to get used to all of this cooking an stuff,

Question for the ladies who didnt used to cook b4 marriage(in other words didnt lay a finger in mum's house:)) How do u cope now, with cooking and house hold chores?

^ You LEARN to cope with cooking and household chores, or in my case, I learnt to cope with cooking, but STILL learning how to cope with the chores...

Actually, to be honest I'm not really enthusiastic about making sure we have something to eat everyday, i mean my husband cooks as well and so do i, but sometimes we r left moping around the house thinking, we are hungry but don't want to cook.

Then its either takeaway or a visit to my mums house.

Yeah, i've seen ocean spray cranberry juice 2. We also found Nando's peri peri sauce somewhere. We went to a Makro in karachi and got so carried away with finding normal supermarket stuff that we ended up with 2 trolley's full to the brim with stuff, that we ended up not using alot of it anyway.

Macro had really nice looking bakery products, chocolate brownie squares with icing on them, iced doughnuts, "fresh baked" cookies, round large cakes... but when i took them home they tasted stale. :(

i didnt do anythin in mums house, always got kicked out of the kitchen, but i kept observing and thats what helped me to cook.

plus when ur alone, its so much easier cos u know if sumat goes wrong, no one's seen it :)

Meatballs are supposed to be soft!! :snooty:. Any one can make rock hard meatballs, only the best of us can make them so they are soft but don’t break..
Tell that ‘aunty’ I want to have a word with her..:asa:

Re: cooking for the first time at in-laws…

well my Aunty(eldely Aunt) is down at my house to visit and she insists tht i make a dish for her...so on Thursday im cooking :S

im very good at making English food and deserts especially Chocolate Gateau's but she dont like tht and neither will my Future inlaws :S

Re: cooking for the first time at in-laws…

My first was meatballs too! Well koftay. And what is this aunty talking about, soft meatballs all the way! I hate it when there are hard meatballs :smack:

if u can cook english dishes u'l be able to cook asian aswell. its all in teh hand. just make a simple pulao and a salan dish. ask ur mum beforehand what to make and it wont be that hard.

although i love pulao, with lamb chops, i havent made it, but teh one with chicken in it is really simple, i made it for teh first time when in laws came over and they all enjoyed it.

LOL, thanks for the votes of confidence in soft meatballs, everyone! So good to know she was wrong all along, the old bag!

yayyyyy!!!!! someone who feels like I do...i mean I can kinda sorta make things, but MOST pakistani foods come out horrid!! This first dish thingy is scaring me lol.....good with american, can make ras malai.....salans come out yucky....wht to do...wht to do......

ahhhhh started copying recipes.....and trying them
