A new book on Gandhi by ex-NYT editor Joseph Lelyveld is banned in Gujrat and will soon be banned by other states in India.
The is called The Great Soul and is written to discover some unknown/hidden aspects of Gandhi’s life. Specially focuses on his life outside India and dealings with westerners.
I am sure the author has put himself into a huge legal mess. If I were an Indian, I would have sued his a$$ off! He got to prove his allegations or pay dearly for it...
If I was indian I'd be outraged too. That being said: Mr. Gandhi is/was a public figure, if india was a secular democracy, even a little, this book (as edgy and untrue it may be) does not deserve a banning. Indian's after all, created kama sutra, which included homosexuality, so it shouldn't be a problem even IF mr. gandhi tended to lean both ways.
nothing new, there were lots of write-ups on this before, only the book is new, and because these are not allegations, that is why nobody who wrote earlier got sued.
big deal. even if the book said he was bi and even if he was bi, how does it change anything? He was the Mahatma and more than 1.6billion people (a full fourth of the world population) owe their freedom to him. The philosophies of ahimsa/non-violence, civil-disobedience and the banishment of mainstream untouchability all are his interpretations of truth and humanity to the world. None of these will be anyless noble.
such no name fame hungry 3rd rate authors really tick me, but bannig his book will make the person richer cause now peoplw would go through anything to buy/download a copy. We did the same to Salman Rushdie and now same will happen to this guy
The Government of India has said it would not ban the book after the author has confirmed that the contents were taken from archives. However the ban on the book by the Government of Gujrat remains.

Mahatma jee never discriminated anyone based on race, gender or social status…and he stood true to his words in every aspect….i would have been disappointed had mahatma jee said NO to someone based on his/her gender…that shows his greatness and adherence to his universal principles.

And slept naked even with his 12 years old niece................that shows his greatness and adherence to his universal principles.
LA attributed freedom of 1.6B people to gandhi....that 1.6B includes BD and Pakistan as well..India's latest pop is 1.2B....so i took BD and Pak out as we attribute our freedom to Jinnah...
(may be we shd attribute our freedom to Nehru as well!!!.... whose continuance rejection of Cabinet Mission’s core proposal "to give significant autonomy to provinces under a loose confederation" in 1946 finally paved way for Pakistan…Jinnah accepted the cabinet mission’s core proposal and agreed to withdraw muslim league’s demand of an independent country subjected to Congress’s approval of Cabinet Mission’s proposal of giving enough autonomy to provinces. Nehru, as congress president, completely changed his direction and opposed the proposal publically to the surprise of most of congress leaders including gandhi and azad. Upon hearing Nehru's viewpoint, Jinnah decided to withdraw his support to Cabinet Mission and the best chance to keep India united went into gutter! Rest is the history! Jaswint Singh has laid down all the details of this historical juncture in his latest book, which created a lot of controversy in India as our indian friends want to view indo-pak history from their prism only and in that prism, Jinnah is the biggest traitor who sold "dharti matta" and was nothing but a power-hungry old man who wanted to even score with nehru and gandhi and for that he was even willing to act as a British agent!!! Jai mata kee...)
SURE…you shd be greatful to Jinnah as well…but arlie, i am also disappointed that you guys have done such a terrible job as far as “cleaning your paak saaf dharti maa of dirty muslimans”…you guys shd have finished them by now!!!
