The most hilighted feature (which is negative) of Umayyad Caliphate is incident of Karbala.
Did they contribute anything positive in world’s history in general and Muslim’s history in particular?

Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
there would be offcourse... but the negative is such a 'hot' issue....those wouldn't be discussed....
PS: honestly i don't understand why you are raising the topic now...during this particular period......(no disrespect to you...just an honest opinion)
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
I already mentioned the negative aspect. That means I know this negative aspect is linked with them.
I was watching a program, where scholars from different sects hilighted negative aspects of Ummayad period besides Karbala.
I don't think there is any harm if a discussion for positive contributions (if there are any) be carried and this doesn't mean that we support or ignore their negative contributions.
Umayyad caliphate is not limited to Yazeed. There were rulers like Omar Bin Abdul Azeez (RA) as well.
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
I agree with all you said...i was just commenting about the timing.....
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
History remains history. Its not that people who hate yazeed, hate him more in Muharram and less in other periods.
I also wanted to know whether after Karbala's incident, Ummayad were able to create any positive image among Muslim Ummah or not?
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
I have not read about early islamic history, the only event that I know for Umayyads is Karbala. Please share if you know of any positive contribution.
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
Would Spain run under the Ummayids, like Abdur rehman who made the grand mosque of cordoba, be considered ummayyad as well or is going across the european pond and mixing with berbers etc negates everything?
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
I think earlier rulers in Spain were Umayyads.
Spain was conquered during the Umayyad age in 714 AD. The Umayyad rule in Spain started in 714 AD (93 AH). It ended in 756 AD (138 AH). ‘Abd al-Azīz, the son of Mūsā Ibn Nusayr, the conqueror of Spain, was appointed the first amīr of Spain. He had married the widow of emperor Frederick. The wicked Christian elements of the vanquished Spain were indulging in mischief-making through the medium of that shrewd woman.
The golden era of Muslims rule in Spain starts in 756 AD (138 AH) with the advent of the rule of ‘Abd al-Rahmān al-Dākhil. It ends in 1036 AD (428 AH). He ruled for about 33 years.** He laid solid foundations of a sovereign and progressive Umayyad government. Instead of adopting the rather exalted little of a khalīfah he preferred to be called as amīr.**
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
One contribution was to spread Islam to Sindh. ![]()
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
really? How many locals converted to Islam during 350 years of Arab rule in Sindh?
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
^ I don't know. If you have information pl share.
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
In Dr Mubarak Ali’s wording: It was not an expedition for religion.
Chagatai Khan: Reinterpretation of Arab Conquest of Sindh by Dr Mubarak Ali.
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
Ok I remember, you once posted that he wanted to loot the resources of Sindh to fund an expedition elsewhere.
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
You know when I was a kid I'd be jealous that Islam reached Sindh first. I wished when Islam reached Sindh it should have included Punjab as well.

Hajjaj wrote to Khalifa that payback ratio in this expedition would be double or more than investment :p
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
lols. Arab troops reached Multan (which was under Dahir’s rule at that time). Technically in Pakistan, Makran is Bab ul Islam ![]()
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
^ hajaj seems to be a good accountant ;) double shah.
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
Yes I know, but some how our history books give Sindh the honour. I am not really sure of the historical importance of balochistan (I hope Mir is not reading
) as there is a historical black hole (at least for me) between mehrgarh and the arrivals of Arabs.
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate

He got good investment appraisal skills. Don't know whether he was also involved in conquest of Spain or not.. But historians are of the view that Ummayads dynasty could survive due to cunning people like Hajjaj.
Re: Contributions of Umayyad Caliphate
I think Makran and rest of Balochistan were treated separate units over a long period of history. Mir Baloch would shed some more light on the matter, but Makran / Balochistan was not India historically.
