You are still not getting the point. Singling out minortoes by establishing a special tax makes them not equal. have every pay the same tax. That is the point. Secondly, tolerance...can I erect a big statue of Buddha in the town square of Mecca?
Matsui and Fateh, now look at it (the concept of Zakat and Jaziya) in a more modern and contemporary light. We live in a Country (call it Pakistan - same as a Quranic country); A Worker comes from overseas (think of him as Kafir or non-Believer). Now that worker pays a non-Resident Tax (call it Jazya), and those who live in Pakistan (call them Believers) they pay Resident Tax (call it Zakat). The guy who pays non-Resident Tax cannot own property among other restrictions. See how easily everything can be put into context, instead of worrying about who is Kafir and who is not? If you want Quran to be your Guide, you have to apply it into today's context. Noone gives a rat's ass about who is Muslim and who is not. To take it a bit further, the non-Resident taxpayer can apply for citizenship to get the same rights as the Residents, and pay Zakat and not pay Jazya.
This is not 7th century Arabia. Let's move on.

In an Islamic government, muslim have to pay Zakat as it is compulsary on them. Zakat is a form of tax made compulsary on muslims. But as non-muslims don't have to pay Zakat, jiziyya is applied on them (which is also a form of tax).
So essentialy both Zakat and Jiziyya are kind of taxes applied on Muslim and non-muslims. Its not to discriminate agains non-muslims but gather revenue from them just like Zakat is used to gather revenue from Muslims
That is a stupid example NYA. religious Minorities are not foreign workers. They have been there before islam was founded. For someone to impose a tax based on religious preference is the 7th century example. Totally anachronistic, totally intolerant.
Mr. Matsui, that was exactly my point. We don't need to look at such commandments from 7th century perspective. Besides, I was talking about guest workers and not resident religious minorities.
Who the hell cares about guest workers? They only take jobs away from hard working people. I say kick them all out.

Religious intolerance arose when somebody is forcefuly stopped from following his true religious believes. Taking a tax to run government can't be one of them!
