we can not say relation between shah bano case and babri mosque demolition............

but there is connection between shah bano case and removal of seal from babri mosque and hindus allowed to worship there.....

congress is only option for muslim in lot of states............

they were blamed by hindus for muslim appeasement.....thats why they wanted to make hindus happy.........

in my view that is the connection between these two incidents...........

Forgive my ignorance - what is the Shah Babo case? I have heard that name, but nothing rings a bell. (I am sure I can google it, but better to get feedback from folks I know at least from this forum.

^the case was for maintenance allowance.........Shah bano was divorced by her husband..........but she filled a case and won

maintenance allowance in supreme court though its against muslim law.....so then Prime minister changed the decision by amending the

personal law...........

Hattori san, if the supreme court went against muslim law and gave Bano the allowance, I would think the court went against muslims on that verdict.

So how did allowing hindus to worship in the Babri Masjid help? Because I would think it was the muslims who needed to be appeased after the court verdict whent against them.

In other words, by going against muslims in the verdict, and appeasing hindus with the masjid worship approval, I would think that was double dispeasing of muslims, correct? So at the least, dont you think the two are not connected?

(or am I confusing everyone, including myself?)

rajiv gandhi amended the law and overturned the decision of supreme court....so this amendment was seen as against dream of uniform civil code that is why rajiv gandhi was blamed for appeasement of muslims.....he amended law and removed some what ambiguity there

thats why he was seen as anti hindu so.....he ordered to remove the locks of babri mosque thats what i know...

So did the decision of Congress to open Babri Masjid for Hindus resulted harmony between two communities? Did appeasing both communities help Congress in next elections?

I've read some cabinet ministers of Indira Gandhi Government were advising her to open Babri Masjid for Hindus even before Shah Bano case, but probably she did want to indulge in a tussle between two minorities (Sikhs & Muslims) at a time.

I believe the BJP won the next election riding on a religious fervot that swept the country?

The result of appeasement to both the communities was, three years after passing Bill against the Shah Bano decision, the Congress suffered one of the biggest electoral defeats in its history, plunging from 404 Lok Sabha seats to 197 seats in the 1989 general election. The Congress has not won a majority in Parliament since.

Moral of the story: Do kashtiyon ke sawaron ki naya paar nahin hoti.

Congress played two political stunts by appeasing two communities (without targeting their actual problems) and could not make happy any of them.

That is the main point. Common people from both the communities are in harmony since centuries and political parties tried to instigate people without assessing the outcome, just for the sake of gaining political mileage.

So you mean to say Congress is party to Kashmir conflict too. Historically, a faction of writers believe that Kashmir issue was created due to Nehru - A Kashmiri.

But History in Khushwant Singh's books is from the perspective of his characters. We can avoid discussing current politics, but discussing past politics affecting course of history should not be a taboo.
