The name Pakhtonkhawa is an insult for the Hazarawals. First that needs to be changed.

Hazara before the invasion of Sikhs was known as “Hazara-Karluk” or “Hazara-Karlugh”. According to land revenue records “Report of the land revenue settlement of the Hazara district of the Punjab” By E. G. Wace (1868-1874), you can even now see references to ‘Haraza-Karlugh’ in land deeds and documents prior to arrival of Sikhs.

This came from the Karluk/Karlugh Turkomans who came with Amir Timur (Tamerlame) to India. Timur also organized his armies in decimal of 10s, Hazara Karlugh comes from the battalion of Karlugh Turkoman soliders. Babur recognized them as Turkic rulers of the area and as his fellow Turk allies and no taxes were imposed on them. Some of the Karlugh assimilated with neighboring Janjua Rajputs (as Janjuas were also allied with Babur’s Mughal army) and were incorrectly referred to as Janjuas by the British. During time of Akbar there was a revolt by the Turk Rajas but it was suppressed by the Moghal armies.

Over the years (especially after arrival of Sikhs), the suffix Karlugh was dropped from Hazara-Karlugh and it simply became Hazara.

Sikhs are recent arrival. Pashtuns were here long before them. The name Hazara we use in everyday conversation. We refer to people who are mixed and do not belong to a specific tribes. We say in Pashto “Da Hazara dee” meaning that these people are hazara we don’t know their ethnicity. The same apply to some people in Afghanistan. Those people are actually mongolian but they are ashamed of that and that’s why the pashtun in Afghanistan named them Hazara. I still think Hazara is very insulting we should change the name to Kohistan or Abaseen. We don’t need to make in ammendment to the constitution, a simple majority in Pakhtunkhwa assembly is all that we need to change the name.
