When posting tips, please specify what Operating System (OS) its for. The above only works in Windows 95/98 (not sure of ME) but does not work in NT, 2000 or XP.

^ before that, type in "shutdown -a" in start --> run, to save yourself a 'pleasant' surprise. Now, hit the 'window key' + "D" and tell me how many icons you got on your desktop.

Here is one tip that can be used with any OS.
Don't ever start a "tips" thread if you have nothing useful to share.

type msconfig on the run bar and you can disable any programs that you dont need to run, this also cuts down on the processes and makes your pc start faster

Look for a file called c/windows/prefetch now delete it the items in the prefetch directory this will speed your boot up time, this works on xp

Use ipconfig in the cmd window for NT/2000/XP.

For MultiCore CPUs ...
u can asign each core 2 specific application like if im rendering ... & want 2 watch movie at a same time .... then
go to task Manager ]
Processes ] tab
right click the process (using most cpu res [3dsmax] ) & click Set Affinity ] then deselect the core(s) u want free for some thing else ...

this will bring up a box with a few tabs, the last tab should be "startup ini"
Select this tab and it will show you all the programs that run everytime you startup (most of them you will find in you systems bar, located in the lower right side of your screen)
You have an option to pick which ones you don't want to start everytime or what I did was "disable all"
This will allow your computer to startup much faster.
Once you startup a program, it might jump back into the startup ini again but you can't avoid that.
