Problem with us is that however Quran and Hadith are proper ilm, we use both of them for our reading pleasures only. Off course when we approach any material with such mindset, we will enjoy the things that appeal to us and ignore the ones that wont impress us.

We dont do such when we are going through our Phd and Graduate course work, We read and understand everything whether we like it or not. Unforunately we only do pick and chose when it comes to Islam.

Correction.
Quran and hadees are not books of fictions which would be read for reading pleasure. People do not touch them unless they are serious about either understanding this religion or they want to criticize it . In both cases they will read them with utmost attention.
There is a difference between reading Quran and hadees with an open mind and with a preconceived notion. What is the harm in reading Quran and hadees with a critical eye even if you are a Muslim ? What is the harm in critically evaluating a hadees or a tafsir after all that is what all the scholars of hadees and tafseer did. They critically evaluated ahadees and compiled the ones they thought were authentic based on certain criteria. Then a scholar read some tafaseer and found something missing or lacking in others and came up with a new one.
