problem with hadeeth is that its misused a LOT.!!!!!
This is not the problem with hadeeth. This is problem with those who misuse it. Otherwise, same can be said for Quran, where people have interpreted Quran to their convenience and misused it. Couple of examples are:
1) Taking the ayat about zabeeha from people of the book and consider it absolute without taking into account the other ayaat that forbid eating anything that has name of Allah not pronounced on them. Some people even interpret that ayat at the time of eating and not slaughtering.
2) Qadiani belief on a different interpretation of the arabic word used in Quran for the Prophet (SAW): "Khatam"
If it was not for hadeeth, we would not have known many things that are actually not mentioned in Quran at all. Can you confirm that meat of Donkey is haram in Quran, for example?
The Quran is definitely the ultimate book of guidance for all of us. Hadith only elaborates and simplifies the subtle 'ahkamaat' given by Allah. Allah says
**"O mankind! Verily, there has come to you the Messenger (Muhammad) with the truth from your Rabb (Sustainer). So believe in him, it is better for you. But if you disbelieve, then certainly to Allâh belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. And Allâh is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise." (Quran 4: 170)
"O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger (Muhammad) and render not vain your deeds." (Quran 47: 33)
**This clearly emphasizes the importance of Hadith and Sunnah in our lives. What we could try to do is that at least follow all the Sahih hadith and believe in them. Especially those reported by the immediate Companions of Prophet Muhammad SAW. As for all za'eef hadith if they contradict the Quran and Sunnah they should not hold any merit.
But IMO..Quran and Hadith both go together. Hadith and SUnnah are just the practical application of Quranic teachings. Thirdly our own 'qiyaas' too should play a major role in reaching various decisions of our lives too.

I have no problem with that , but many ahadees are very hard for me to swallow from even those saha sitta , from figah jafaria and what not. I will give more credence to hadees from figah jafaria because they come from ahle bait but even in that compilation I find many ahadees which do not appeal to my common sense. It is not a critique of any book of hadees , it is an expression of how I feel. I might be wrong. We will find that out on the day of judgement .
add to that the people like Josh Milyahabadi who (its in his autobiography “yaadon kee barat”) quoted the ayat of Quran where it says that dont go to Namaz when intoxicated. He argued that it clearly shows that intoxication is not prohibited, but only offering prayers while intoxicated is.
See this is the reason why we need Scholars and Moulanas. They learn the quran with proper siyaq-o-sabaaq and know the history and reason of the revelation of each and every ayaat. You just cannot understand quran by reading translation.

Problem with us is that however Quran and Hadith are proper ilm, we use both of them for our reading pleasures only. Off course when we approach any material with such mindset, we will enjoy the things that appeal to us and ignore the ones that wont impress us.
We dont do such when we are going through our Phd and Graduate course work, We read and understand everything whether we like it or not. Unforunately we only do pick and chose when it comes to Islam.

Correction.
Quran and hadees are not books of fictions which would be read for reading pleasure. People do not touch them unless they are serious about either understanding this religion or they want to criticize it . In both cases they will read them with utmost attention.
There is a difference between reading Quran and hadees with an open mind and with a preconceived notion. What is the harm in reading Quran and hadees with a critical eye even if you are a Muslim ? What is the harm in critically evaluating a hadees or a tafsir after all that is what all the scholars of hadees and tafseer did. They critically evaluated ahadees and compiled the ones they thought were authentic based on certain criteria. Then a scholar read some tafaseer and found something missing or lacking in others and came up with a new one.

What is the harm in reading Quran and hadees with a critical eye even if you are a Muslim ? .
I guess this is the hard line between you and me. What you dont see as harm is what I see as total disobedience. To me, 99% loyalty is 100% disloyalty and critical eye is nothing more than a possible doubt which is a form of disloyalty to me.
^ No offense TLK but that's exactly how occults spread. Occults require 100% loyalty and adhere to 0% criticism policy. How does that make Islam followers any different?

Fair enough. Lakum deenakum wa lea deen.
I have no control over my thought process or the rebel in me, but I have control over staying the right course and that is the free will at play.
To me nothing gives me more satisfaction then coming up with a doubt and then praying Allah for guidance and thanking Allah for either guiding me or keeping me on the straight path.

A quick question, how does that reference from the quran say anything about hadith and its importance? To me it seems to be more about believing in the prophet (pbuh) and accepting his message of Islam being the true religion etc rather than hinting at anything to do with hadith. Perhaps its just about how its interpreted!?
doubts come to mind when reading something man. But started eading something with doubt already in mind (your words were “eading Quran and hadees with a critical eye”) means that you are trying to find faults in it to begin with. That is why I said that now you are presenting a different picture than what you painted earlier
