There was an attack on former chief justice Sajjad Ali Shah as well. But as far as I remember, the reaction from lawyers was not as supportive of Sajjad Ali Shah as it is for Iftekhar Chaudhry.

If yes, is it because Sajjad Ali Shah was a Sindhi, and Iftekhar Chaudhry is Punjabi?
Or is it because Musharraf is muhajir, and Nawaz Sharif was Punjabi?
Punjabis supporting the Punjabi attacker (Nawaz) when attacked person is non-Punajbi, and they supporting the Punjabi person attacked (Chaudhry) when attacker is non-Punjabi, would be a highly unsettling scenario.
Something seems fishy to me. And I would be glad to be proven wrong.

The judiciary may have shown its independence when Sajjad Ali Shah was attacked. But they disowned him at that time. And now everyone seems to be all in favor of very same independence of judiciary which they gave up in front of Nawaz last time.
When Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah was being attacked, both bar and bench were divided and his own ‘brother judges’ were responsible for his ouster. It may be remembered that Sajjad Ali Shah had via the judges case verdict set rules which could have led to the independence of the judiciary. The bar at that time was divided and, under the leadership of Abid Hasan Minto, remained an honourable spectator.
This time the reaction of the bar against the de facto ‘suspension’ of the Chief Justice of Pakistan is almost radically unanimous. The lawyers’ fraternity has come out protesting the presidential reference against the chief justice on the streets across the country.

and sajjad ali shah character can be visualized by a series of columns written in nawa-i-waqt by his mate judge a month ago...he did all this for his seat...he is not even compareable to the foot-level of Ifthikhar muhammad chaudry !!!!!!

This may be one of the reason. But it looked something very serious going on. Attack on GEO and Mush's unconditional appology indicates, things are out of his control.

A big difference this time is that an army cief in his unifrom summoned CJ and sacked him. People have gotten tired of retired army genaral occupying all civilian posts, secondly, Sajjad Ali Shah did not have to his credit cases that affected common people, like Iftikhar Chaudhary.

i knew it was coming. if there is no crisis, it is because punjabis are supporting musharraf. if there is a 'crisis', it is because punjabis are agitating against the mohajir president.
i don't like one thing about mush supporters. if something goes right, they'll give the credit to mushy. but if something goes wrong, they'll try to blame his advisers, govt. politicians, agencies, and the 'punjabi army' (which is more 30% non-punjabi -25% pashtun(BBC), 70,000 sindhi(mush)- lawyers, police etc.
by the way justice chaudhry is a punjabi-baloch, and the day he was 'sacked' i read the opinions from some baloch 'nationalists' that federal govt. is not ready to accept anyone from balochistan. and how do we explain the voices of protest emanating from other provinces?
Nawas Shareef, a democratically elected PM, was also summoned to the SC. this time it was Mush who summoned the CJP to army house. as far as justice Shah is concerned, even the Sindhi PM who appointed him CJ bypassing other senior judges regretted her decision in retrospect.

Sorry to say but many people are abusing instead of talking with logic and sharing opinions.
I know present CJ is right, and I condemn his sacking in such a manner. And I know Sajjad Ali Shah was not as much a good justice as Justice Chaudhry is. But "independence of judiciary" is beyond our likes and dislikes. It should be true in ALL cases, irrespective of how good or bad a CJ is/was in our opinion.
Now when lawyers are condemning present CJ's sacking and everyone calling it a coup on independence of judiciary, I am wondering why the same lawyers were silent in case of Sajjad Ali Shah?!

I agree with what you are saying. Ex CJ Sajjad Ali Shah was appointed by BB ignoring seniority. When time came for him to help BB in sacked case against Leghari he upheld the unconstitutional decision of ex-president. In other words, he was totally un-reliable, un-helpful, coward and good for nothing. He sided with the party which later on came to his throat. He reaped what he sowed. Present CJ boldly faced the dictator even masses weren’t mobilized. I would not rather go Sindhi vs. Punjabi reason. Farq Saaf Zahir Hay.

Anyone who wants to rule Pakistan ,has to have Punjabs backing,otherwise they should forget about it...Remember what happened to Benazir's 1st Govt . when Nawaz Sharif was controlling Punjab.

The purpose of the thread was only to raise a point. And point is that we should only be concerned with what is right for Pak, and not about ethnicities.
I support unlawful sacking of present CJ, as much as I supported coup by Nawaz against Sajjad Ali Shah, even if I disagreed with him.
Someone in this thread said that BB made Sajjad Ali Shah CJ only for being Sindhi. Is this true? Now either BB is a prejudiced politician against Punjabis, or the person here who alleged it on her is a prejudiced Punjabi against Sindhis.
Similarly, Lahore High Court lawyers who are reacting so much against sacking of current CJ (I agree with them) while claiming independence of judiciary ... were silent when judiciary's independence was at stake when Nawaz went against Sajjad Ali Shah. Why were they silent, if not for prejudice against a Sindhi judge?
Some people can not think beyond their prejudiced narrow-minded thinking.
Lastly, it is not about only Punjabis being prejudiced. I have seen similar sentiments in ALL people, including muhajirs and Sindhis. Such thinking is poisonous for Pakistan. It will lead us nowhere. We have too many enemies, and in order to develop our society, we need to think only about the rule of law and only about what is right for everyone.
