Do you take your damaged shoes to cobbler for repair or you throw them away ?
Do you have cobblers (mochi ) in your areas , espacially people living in west ?
Do you get your hand bags school bags repaired when they get damaged ?

Re: Cobbler, The Shoe Doctor
coupla months ago, i was pounding bombay pavement when my sandal broke… no worries, there was a cobbler on every street! i got it repaired in 5 mins, looking with interest at his toolbox. he worked so efficiently and did a great job.. and he charged me just Rs.10… i ended up giving him a dollar coz i just felt really embarrassed… but a lady standing behind me gave me an exasperated look when she saw me do that :-\
in brooklyn, there is a cobbler who mends shoes, handbags, etc. once i broke the strap on my handbag and he told me it would be $15 to repair it. i just walked out.. figured i could just put that money towards somet else ![]()
Re: Cobbler, The Shoe Doctor
well... in usa I'd just buy a new pair of shoes or bag then paying all that money to the cobbler.
Re: Cobbler, The Shoe Doctor
No its 2 expensive to get things fixed by a cobbler here in the UK I just end up buying sumthing new, sumtimes I take cum of my thing to pakistan whn i go, and get it fixed by the michi thr, they r amazing and cheap
Re: Cobbler, The Shoe Doctor
It depends , for my and my wife's expensive shoes I use shoe repair shop to get them repaired or to give them a new life , 100+ dollar shoes but for less expensive ones we end up throwing them.
The kids shoes end up at Goodwill because the kids outgrow their shoes very fast and the shoes are still in pretty good shape.
Re: Cobbler, The Shoe Doctor
the mouchis in Pakistan can do an awesome job ...i have had many shoes/bags and even luggage fixed from them....
here in the US....i'll just get another pair of shoes or bag rather than taking it to get repaired....
Re: Cobbler, The Shoe Doctor
I wholeheartidly agree with you :k: Mochi,s here are some master craftsmen. They repair stuff with ease and perfection ![]()
I have come across many of them and mostly they appear to be wise people. It is very unfortunate that people with so much skill are drastically underpaid
But on the other hand, most of the people go to them are not very rich either.
One interesting incident. Once my shoe got damaged. It had a rather unconventional metal buckle, which broke off. I showed it to few mochi,s They refused it saying that it is unrepairable. I was persistent as I was not in the mood of buying a new pair. I am a miser, I try to re-use tissue too, you know ![]()
Anyway, I found a relatively bigger shop and explained my Raam kahani. He too refused. ( I knew that shoe is not repairable due to unavailability of buckle these cobblers are rightly refusing it )
Slightly dejected, In a last ditch effort I said to him ( in regional language of course)
Look brother ! Just like sick people first go to doctors and if they are not cured they go to specialist. See, i have visited all the doctors in the vicinity, and now i have come to ‘specialist’ …
![]()
Hearing this, his face got lightened up. He took back my shoe back and said *" Bao jee, Hun tussi aina keh ditta aye tu koi na koi hal te kadna paye ga " *( Now that you insist, i will have to find a workaround for you )
He pondered for a couple of minutes, and fixed my shoe with an ingenius solution in next couple of minutes. In the end we both were happy.
I think this was the best compliment i gave to anyone.
Re: Cobbler, The Shoe Doctor
^hehehe good story!
they're really so good with their hands, very creative and great problem solvers. definitely undervalued and underestimated.
next to the cobbler's setup on the pavement, there was a key-maker. my mum got duplicate keys made... it was kewl to watch. i mean, they didn't have any fancy equipment like the key-maker on my street in NYC, but he did a great job too!
Re: Cobbler, The Shoe Doctor
Lot of my old-time favorite shoes and bags have more string and glue than leather or cloth . Sometimes I have shoes stitched up just as a preventive measure. I never seen my cobbler...just experienced his work...I always send my things via the gardener and we negotiate price the same way!! Always I have to ask for a discount so he always (and I know that he does) quotes me little higher then comes down in price. Amazing job they do!
