ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan announced that Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif has been appointed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as a ‘mediator’ and ‘guarantor’ for bringing the current crisis between the government and protesters to an end.
Speaking to their supporters late Thursday night, Tahirul Qadri and Imran Khan said they have given the prime minister 24 hours upon General Sharif’s assurances.
Both Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri have been in contact with the Army Chief and he is likely to mediate and steer all parties out of this deadlock, military sources said.
Meetings between General Raheel Sharif, Imran and Tahirul Qadri were confirmed by Director General ISPR Asim Bajwa on Twitter. The DG ISPR also updated the start of the meetings, both of which ran for a very short period of time.
Both the PTI chairman and the PAT chief urged their supporters to stay in the federal capital for one more day and wait until the deadline ends in order to plan a future course of action after these latest developments.
Reactions on the political front
Speaking on a private TV channel, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain welcomed the mediation by Army Chief General Sharif, saying imminent damage to Pakistan had been averted.
Voicing his concern over the late night developments, PTI senior leader Javed Hashmi told a private TV channel that it was unfortunate that the army had to step in to resolve a political crisis.

@Sachaydino Previous government was in full cooperation with military. Zardari was intelligent and never tried to cross his scope while his government allied with other political parties.

PPP has gone through much bigger crisis than this one. They never ever asked military to help their government. Some how they managed to control the ugly situation created by TuQ earlier. I don't understand why leaders of PML(N) and its supporters could not do this? Are they really 'Daggas' with no brains?

They were smart and worked very cautiously to continue the system. But this government proved very incompetent, stupid and now lickers of military arses. Shame on them. This is not democracy what PML(N) is doing now.

I will give this to PPP, I can go in a street and give ma behn ki gaaliyaan to Zardari and nothing will happen to me.
If I do that to Nawaz while Noon are in power then I am as good as dead.

I think their ego drowned them. SS wanted to rule Punjab as his jageer and NS was dying to be PM third time. If they act sensibly, they could have easily avoided this like last government. NS proved that he couldn't learnt a lesson from hardships he faced during all this period of his exile. His mentality is still same like 15-20 years back, when he was inquired his profession in Supreme Court, he replied ' I'm PM Pakistan'.

I welcome any intervention that result in peaceful and amicable solution where all 3 parties give and take and end this impasse. Maybe in future parties can build enough trust to work it out themselves. Its far from perfect but its good start vs old days of ransacking and destroying govt property followed by police crackdown and implementation of martial laws with lots of dead bodies to show. There never was democracy in pakistan otherwise it would not have gotten to this point. i just hope all 3 party will be gracious in their speeches to their constituents and preach harmony and forgiveness for each other. l

Zardari gone through much sever crisis than this one. CJ, MQM, Media, PML(N), TuQ, Military etc created all kinds of hurdles in smooth working, hence his whole time spent in saving the government rather than development and chronic problems such as terrorism faced by him.

I think all the flexibility shown by NS during Charter of Democracy was just for fulfilling his dream to become PM third time and he remained friendly opposition to get law amended accordingly. sad afsos 'jab aankh khuli gul ki to khizan ka mosam tha'. Not feeling bad for this power hungry family, but it seems that Pakistan is again going to face military dictatorship.

Sorry, but that is not true. PPP accepted anything and everything dictated by military as long as they were allowed to continue loot maar. They even created unconstitutional position 'deputy prime minister' and appointed Pervaiz Elahi (mil proxy) against it. They inducted PML(Q) into cabinet. Didn't they 'restore' judiciary only when a phone call from GHQ was received?

Agreed. But then challenging its authority in civilian matters than backing out like this, is worst than what PPP did.
