Mujra have been part of Indo-Pak culture for centuries. There were many poets and writers who created classic literature based on their interaction with Tawaifs. Manto, Mirza Hadi Ruswa, Shorish Kashmiri and Sahir Ludhyanwi’s classic works are based on them.
What was the attraction in Mujras? is it due to man’s nature to see woman dancing on his moves?
There was a time that these mujra karne waliyans got biggest place in darbars of rulers like Ranjeet Singh (one of his Muslim wife was a nautch girl Moran, on whose name he built a mosque in Lahore, which remained famous as Kanjri di masjid).
I remember Gulzar Saheb presenting tribute to Umrao Jan and calling her representative of sub-continent’s Ganga-Jamni Tehzeeb.
How do you see the tradition of Mujra in society? Why and how it converted from sophistication to vulgarity?
muqa you are using b-word in your post. masjid is masjid. dont promote bad association.
STA my dear.. as far as I know Punjabi.. Kanjri doesn't mean prostitute. It means dancing girl. if it meant prostitute. Bulleh Shah never had said ' Nach Nach ke yaar manawa gi, paawe kanjri banena pe jawe'
I read at many places that rich people used to send their kids to learn etiquette and mannerism from the tawaa'if of Lucknow and Delhi.
Yes I also read something like that. There was a misconception that all tawaifs were involved in prostitution, but there was category which was only related to dancing.
Is there any difference between Domnis and Tawaifs?
Domnis were ONLY singers with minimal dancing like the one u just saw in the video clip. i suppose! :)

But still sending a small child in a place where drinks were served and everyone was drunk?
