Let me explain STA's comment before someone bans him for a insulting comment about lahoris.
Kothaa is refereed to the upper story of the house (I think highest story of the house). Because the way Tawaif Khanay were setup, actual business used to take place on the second floor of the house, hence the word Kothaa became associated with the business.

Kothaa is refereed to the upper story of the house (I think highest story of the house). Because the way Tawaif Khanay were setup, actual business used to take place on the second floor of the house, hence the word Kothaa became associated with the business.
Kotha is also common with UP walas. Remember Hasrat Mohani's famous ghazal 'Chupke chupke raat din aansoo bahana yaad hai', where he says in a shair:
do paher ke dhoop meiN, mere bulaane ke liye
wo tera kothe pe nange paaOn aana yaad hai

In our language kothaa is chhat/roof.
