Re: CJ wanted to be PM & agencies to supply info on other judges
A no from me too.
And a counter question too;
Do you consider refusing a civilian aircraft belonging to the national carrier carrying over a 100 civilian men, women and children including foreign nationals as well as the country's serving Army Chief who is undoubtedly a symbol of national pride and sovereignty, being refused landing on Pakistani soil and being diverted to 'anywhere but here, even India' with limited fuel remaining, an act of treason, attempted murder, massacre, genocide?
He had 3 options upon landing;
a. Hand over power to BB
b. Reconcile with NS, shame the Army already frustrated by NS over Kargil and resign.
c. Hang Nawaz.
d. Hold elections in 8 weeks. In other words option a again.
Initial decisions were the best. Later some errors can never be ruled out, but overall everyone remembered the sweet taste of mithai for first few years alike.
Nswaz Sharif, as the elected PM of the country, had the right to sack the COAS, but the way he used his authority to sack the army chief was of course not sensible. And what Mushrraf did thenceforth was nothing else but an act of treason, he had no right to topple an elected government just to save his job, not by any manner of means.
People might have distributed sweets but not to welcome an another decade long military dictatorship. They're not as idiot as some people here are adamant to prove.
This is an excerpt from Hassan Abbas's book "Pakistan's drift into extremism":
Yet another 'new era' began in Pakistan on oct 12, 1999. Many in the street danced with joy, and many were those who went into a swoon as the anxiety of the hours preeceding Musharraf's safe landing abated. He was not the most popular man in the country but he had ousted a coterie that had lost credibility with the people.
How many passengers were killed, none. Ho many civilians died when Musharraf allowed his partners in Karachi to show their strength and brawn, more or less 40. Now what would you call it, an act of treason, attempted murder, massacre, genocide?
Both Nawaz and Mushy should be prosecuted in an independent court for their crimes and let the court decide what punishment should be given to them for their crimes.
As far as the Kargil misadventure is concerned, it was a very defective plan and it might have caused a full scale war with India, for which the country was not prepared. You can't conquer what you cannot defend. Army should be happy that Nawaz made himself a scapegoat for the blunder of his generals and saved the country from further humiliation. The only purpose of the whole Kargil operation was to sabotage the peace process with India.
