KARACHI: The world’s largest power-generating ship reached Karachi from Turkey on Thursday.
The Turkish-made power ship, Kaya Bey, is docked in the open sea between the Korangi Thermal Power Station and Jamot jetty.
The Turkish company (Karkey) that owns the ship guaranteed 93 per cent efficiency to provide the 231.8 MW based on diesel-run sets for 60 months.
Work on laying the high tension lines and an underground cable between the thermal plant and the Qayyumabad grid for the new supply has been completed and the network is being tested.
The ship came as part of an agreement signed a year ago between Pakistan and a private Turkish company. The Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco), Siemens and the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) have been preparing for its arrival.
As reported in The Express Tribune earlier, the ship will provide electricity to the Lakhra Power Generation Company Limited, a Pepco subsidiary, through KESC. Karkey has erected a tower to connect the power ship to the Karachi grid. It has also produced and delivered related interconnection protection panels to Lakhra Power after completing dredging and interconnection facilities.
The ship has the necessary fuel storage facilities on board or on storage vessels berthed near it. The company entered a rental services contract in December 2008 after winning the international bid and has completed necessary groundwork for operation of the ship.
The company entered a rental services contract in December 2008 after winning the international bid and will help to address the woes of domestic and industrial consumers of electricity in the city. These rental power plants will supply power to the national electricity grid in an attempt to stem the power crisis in the country.
The inauguration of the supply is expected after an on-board ceremony to welcome dignitaries on the 21st of this November.
I am pretty sure it is not free. We will be paying for it, which we must anyway.
Why do we need to look forward to handouts anyway. We pay we get , but it is impressive that Turkey has that kind of technology which we can use at a low rate. The quoted the least rate in a bidding.

I agree with u. I hope nobody finds a way to hook up kunda to the ship :D

It may be least rate in the bidding or highest 'fees' to win the bid :D... definitely the rate will still be higher than producing the power locally. It is interesting to note that the government is willing to higher more companies to generate power but unable to pay the ones already producing power.

You always think negative isn't it? This kind of thinking will lead this country to nowhere. Perhaps you always think underhand dealings which is by nature every corrupt pakistani think like that. Isn't it?

Negative, sure, I am pessimist, why do you think that is?

Yes, every corrupt Pakistani thinks like that except the most honest, most patriot, most sincere the one and only Zardari. We always want to have kick-backs because we want to maintain our lavish lifestyle, we have to maintain our high quality rare breed horses, we need to make sure that our grand kids can maintain the same lifestyle or improve on it, how can we do that? Only by asking for kickbacks.
I agree with Captain1, if Pakistan can't pay the companies already producing power, how the hell will it pay for new projects like this one? Internal circular debt in the power sector is now at hundreds of billions of rupees, the main reason for the energy crisis right now. And I'm supposed to believe that Pakistan is setting up more projects?
That's like saying "I can't afford a mehran, but I'm going to buy a BMW..."
That is what I am saying. Everything ends up in Zardari phobia. I think you should move on and think beyond your typical limited thinking. Don't discount which is something seems to be good for the country and its people.

How are we going to pay for the rental power plants?
We could always buy power plants on installment plans :P installments would be higher but eventually we would own the plant!
We can do better even with the present installed capacity but only we are determined as nation to cut down useless use of electricity and avoiding its theft and paying the bills.

Yes, I do have Zardari phobia, but I also have other phobias against other great characters like Nawaz Shiri, Altaf Hussain, Musharraf but fortunately they are not controlling Pakistan currently. Only if govt can setup clean process/accountability then it wouldn't matter to me whether its Mr 10% or Mr Wig in power.
