Is there any particular age when this must be carried out by? Does the person performing the circumcision have to be a muslim or can it be performed by say a doctor in a hospital?
I don't think it has to be performed by a muslim (when our boy was born, we only had American doctors there, and none were muslims). Circumcision needs to be done, and for the sake of the child, you should probably get it done as soon as possible. Typically during the first month, though for C-sec babies, doctors wait for 60 days. It used to be very painful for the kids, but with new processes used, its relatively painless process. The older the baby is, chances are it will be more painful for him.
The above is not a religious ruling, but just what my experience is. I am sure, someone will come along shortly to provide the requisite cut-and-paste.
shahreen,
it depends on what the doctors say.. if you have researched it well and have decided that it's the way to go, as Faisal said, the earlier the better for the kid.
There is no instruction in the Qur'an for mandatory circumcision.. All I know is that it's a Jewish practice... that too probably not from the Torah.. but someone more knowledgable is welcome to correct.
PA, Jews performed it for health reasons. Jewish people are way older than the Torah. Jew babies born in US hospitals don’t get circumcision at the time of the birth, but it is a ritual that they do at home, with a Rabbi officiating at the cutting ceremony. It’s a big deal among Jews. Usually done within 6 weeks of birth.
Earlier the better. A cousin of mine wasn’t circumcised until his teenage years, because of health reasons. Poor guy forgot to ride the bike after that experience, and screams could be heard in the next village.
I have two boys who were circumcised at the time of the birth by the same Obstetrician who delivered them. But American doctors don’t know how to make a nice topa (head). Only Punjabi Barber is gifted in that art.

NYAhmadi: It is prescribed in the Torah, see Genesis 17 for more details. It is part of the Covenant that God made with Abraham and his offspring. It should be done at eight years old (the initial people were older). Jesus according to the Gospels were taken to be circumcised at age 8 days according to Luke.2v21. The ritual is normally done by a Rabbi.
Bhiajan Old man, everything in Torah was practiced before too. The practice was given a religious ratification, it doesn’t mean that it did not exist. Abraham was circumcised before the commandment in Genesis.
Circumcision: It is prescribed that the boy be circumcised, it is recommended that the circumcision take place on the seventh day, but it is obligatory to circumcise before the boy reaches puberty.
This was taken from this site insh’Allah i’ll look for the daleel for this.
Volume 8, Book 74, Number 312:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said "Five things are in accordance with Al Fitra (i.e. the tradition of prophets): to be circumcised, to shave the pelvic region, to pull out the hair of the armpits, to cut short the moustaches, and to clip the nails.’
Hey,
I don’t care about the reason(s) behind circumcision.. A circumcised penis is a good looking penis and that is the bottom line. It makes me proud when I see myself in the bath.

I suppose it might have been practiced before Abraham was ordered to do it. If one believe the Bible's version, Abraham wasn't circumcised until being told to do so as per my quote. Ismael also was circumcised the same time.
As to your comment "Jewish people are way older than the Torah":
The Jews as nation did not exist until time of Moses who wrote the Torah.
Thanks for the advice. My son is now 2 months old and although the doctor offered to carry out the circumcision on him at the hospital we felt it was possibly too soon as he was only 2 days old then. But all the people I have spoken to say the sooner it is done the better, i was just posting this as I was wondering if there was any religious ruling on when it should be done by.
Had it done for my son by a Mohel..
1 day old. And expert my doctor recomended, even though I was raised Catholic.
Was bloody also.
Didn't want to touch it. But I had to. Afriad I would be hurting him. But I did. I had to. Keep clean.
Baby was healed before I left hospital.
I have also heard the earlier the better....but dil par baroosa karna parta hay...coz it hurts to see your child in pain....
Some questions
Can someone describe this procedure. I am still not sure what they do.
Do/Can kids get complications.
What if it is not been done (health reasons not religious) ?
These punjabi barbers use a knife as cutting instrument right ? do the sterlize it before using it again ? I just wonder coz of all the diseases that can be given through blood contact ect .. ?
I would think punjab doctors know what to do.
After all? They are men, aren't they?
I seriously doubt intention was to hurt.
I don't know the actual process, as it was carried out in the operation theatre, but basically they remove the excess skin from around the forehead of the penis.
Regarding your other questions, well, yes, there can be complications, if the doctor is not skilled enough or they don't use antispetics and stuff, but circumcision is soooo common, that your chances of being stuck with a truely in-experienced bloke are minimal.
Punjabi barbers was a term used by NYA, and I guess in many areas of Pakistan, circumcision, or khatna as it is called, is done by barbers, however, in cities, especially when baby is born in a hospital and you have paediatric specialists, the circumcision is done by professional doctors.
There are many articles on the net which talk about health advantages of circumcision, and probably as many articles which claim otherwise. Most muslims don't really read up such information cz muslim boys are circumsized as part of religious duty, similar to giving adhan and giving the baby a nice name.
Coming to personal experience, we had heard a lot of horror stories about how circumcision is painful. We were told that the baby can not wear diaper for 48 hours (think of all the mess) and that his legs are bound by strings to keep them separate and all that horrible stuff. Well, as it happened we showed up at the clinic at the appointed time (it was in USA). The baby was about 30 days old. It was an out-patient environment. The nurse came in and took the baby to the operating table. The ob we had selected for the baby was the same one who would be doing the circumcision. Before going to the operating room, he stopped by us to reassure that its a fairly common procedure and no harm will come to the baby. Nevertheless we were worried as to what'll happen inside.
Sure enough, in about 15 minutes the doctor came out, smiling. He assured us that it was all quite well. We asked about the pain to the baby and he said "well, during the process it may have been a bit painful, but now the baby is peacefully asleep". The doctor prescribed some pain-killers in case the baby has trouble sleeping at the night. When the nurse gave us the baby back, there were no strinigs attached to the legs. He was wearing a normal diaper and was peacefully asleep. He woke up in a while, and was fed and was playing like normal. He was also able to pee without any problems. There was no swelling or irritation. We never even had to give him any pain-killers either cz he was in no pain, or never cried or anything. I am assuming the modern procedures to carry out circumcision have come a long way from the days gone by. Its actually very simple and painless process for the babies and their parents.
Hope it helps.
ahem

Point taken. BUT, the Jews only really start functioning as a nation once Moses started the exodus. Up to that time, they were mainly slaves and called "Hebrews" (see Exodus 2v6). They are for the first time called "Israelites" in Moses' time.
BTW. even if we do accept that Israel was a nation pre-Moses, the Torah was written by Moses making it still later than Abraham!
In any event, the Israelites in the time of Moses did not practice circumcision as can be seen from the fact that (a) Moses did not circumcise his own sons (Exodus 4v25) and (b) that the whole tribe of Israelites had to be circumcised (Josh.5v2-5) because they did not circumcise during the desert travel.
Faisal, thank you for your help. I guess I am just scared that Harris will be hurt or in pain but from what you tell me its a pretty simple procedure. Its really helped put y mind at ease so thanks once again.
We are going to book an appointment for it soon as from what people have been telling me, the sooner it is done the better.
