Circumcision?

i’m looking into whether this is a recommendation or an obligation for baby boys, and i came across this…

http://qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?HD=1&ID=4826&CATE=163
(the question is about long nails on women but it mentions circumcision in the answer)

…and now i’m really confused… is it permissible in islam or not? if you don’t circumcise, is that ok?

elsewhere on sunnipath it says its a religiously praiseworthy act but not required.

Re: Circumcision?

It's sunnah to do that- I'm quite sure about that. There are other medical benefits also so I think you should consider it.

Re: Circumcision?

Religion aside, is it bad if baby is not circumcised for whatever reason?

i'm sure if an adult male converts to Islam, he is not obligated to have a circumcision, is he? (is that even possible?)

Re: Circumcision?

Circumcision as an adult is a bit more risky than as a child and is usually only done if there is a medical issue. It is sunnah and as nisik said there are other health benefits, there was a study done some time ago about decreased risk of contracting HIV when circumcised men wore no condom. It's really up to the parents, some muslims consider sunnah as fard, some don't. I personally don't consider sunnah as fard, but if I was to have a boy I would definatly get him circumcised asap.

Re: Circumcision?

according to the Hanafi verdict, its sunnah… Shafi say its obligatory…

Re: Circumcision?

if you are muslim..or jewish..u gotta get it done

Re: Circumcision?

Yeah, a male convert doesn't have to..

Generally speaking it is just a sunnah and not obligatory for us Hanafis..

Re: Circumcision?

I was looking into the health benefits and apparently there really isn't much by way of studies being done that proves it is healthier or cleaner. So long as you while they're infants/your child when they're older, can keep it clean, as with any other part of the body, there isn't a greater advantage to being circumcised.

Re: Circumcision?

I’m no scholar or anything but circumcision is prescribed as a Sunnah. And from my limited knowledge, anything that is Sunnah is beneficial.

A Google News search highlights various articles that note the benefits of circumcision. These are results from actual research so I suggest look them up. About 4-5 articles down the page there’s lots of references and literature. The results list a number of medical benefits for women and men.

Google News Results For ‘Circumcision’

Personally as a Muslim (Even an imperfect one as me) I would follow Sunnah.

What about a horrible analogy from me? When given the choice between passing your exams and getting and A or a B, wouldn’t you prefer an A? :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Circumcision?

Majority of Sunni scholars think it's obligatory for male babies to get circumcised.

Some of the health benefits of circumcision according to WebMd are, including:

**A decreased risk of urinary tract infections.

A reduced risk of sexually transmitted diseases in men.

Protection against penile cancer and a reduced risk of cervical cancer in female sex partners.

Prevention of balanitis (inflammation of the glans) and balanoposthitis (inflammation of the glans and foreskin).

Prevention of phimosis (the inability to retract the foreskin) and paraphimosis (the inability to return the foreskin to its original location).**

Oh...sgc...:D

Re: Circumcision?

Are you concerned about the pain later? If so, we didn't have any issues with my first born. They do it while you are in the hospital (at least in the US) and they didn't let anyone be with him.

Re: Circumcision?

In the UK they don't do it immediately, within a week or a month or so, I think. Altho when my BIL and SIL took their newborn, there was also a 5yo there. Poor little guy! I think in some places it is done much later, up until puberty. I don't know the reasoning.

But I think here in the US it's usually done right in the hospital, if you want to.

Re: Circumcision?

can i just say circumsized pee pee's ´look much neater tahn ones taht havent been.. dont ask me how i know.. i just do.

ofcourse.. imho.

and it doesnt hurt them .. mine didnt even cry when we got his done.. though the 1 yr old tat was there.. oh man.... that kid CRIED. the younger they are .. the better. mine was 2 weeks.

Re: Circumcision?

In the UK it's down to the parents to organise when they have their baby circumcised as it's done privately, which is why different babies have it done at different ages. Most parents try to arrange it as soon as possible after birth though.

Re: Circumcision?

Agree with khawa on the neat looking point. And if you do decide to get it done do it ASAP. Jr. Was a week old when we got it done , slept most of the day and in 3 days he was great. So glad we did it then. Can't imagine putting him through this if he was older.

Re: Circumcision?

Yes, if we did opt for it, it would be immediately/within a week. Its not so much the surgery as just wondering if its necessary to put bebe through an elective surgery. Hopefully the Bean is a girl and we can avoid this debate entirely! haha Oy... :p

Re: Circumcision?

LOL - My husband and I had the same conversation the other day. Although we did make the decision to go ahead and get the baby circumsized.

Re: Circumcision?

^ You had your baby?? It was a boy?? Awwww many, many congratulations!!! How is everyone doing? How're you finding life with a newborn? How's the laundry situation? lol :p

Re: Circumcision?

SCG no baby yet - not for another 8 weeks or so....but if we have a boy, we'll have him circumsized.
