Re: Muslims who live in the West while hating the West…
seminole,
Yeh KSA has horrid laws in allowing ppl to practice their faith. that much i have said already and the rest of teh post is not reversding my position in anyway. Its more to explain the compound concept to you.
I lived in KSA so let me set the record straight here. expats and foriegners were not tossed in compounds by the locals or the govt. the compounds are hardly ‘internment camps’ and ppl are not forced to live there.
Additionally, the compounds were not there to protect them from local population, they have existed since way before any of the regional hostilities.
The multi-nationals they work for decided that to attract these foriegn workers they need to give them an experience similar to what they would have in their home countries as they may not be able to handle saudi way of life. So in saudi Arabia you have these compounds where things are going on that are completely against saudi laws, culture and norms, but allows the foriegn workers to live how they are used to.
here are a couple of sites about one of teh original and largest ‘compounds’ a mini ciry really..
even this major university outside Riyadh had its own residential areas, parks etc etc. imagine a huge gated community, if you dont live there you cant go in unless authorized by one of teh residents and u have to register. same was teh case with Aramco.
Unless the company requires ppl to live in these compounds, they dont have to, they can go live in the city. Most choose to live in compounds for the type of lifestyle they are used to, and of course housing is heavily subsidized. so most people do not choose to live outside these compounds.
Ppl who did not have the option to live in compounds wished that they lived in one of those., and for many it was a cheap vacation to go spend a week with friends who live in one of these compounds.
so a similar example would be if arab expats in US had a choice to live in compound where they could do things that US laws did not allow for, lets say call for prayers via loudspeakers 5 times a day.
or european expats in US had compounds where homosexuality was recognized, broadcast TV had frontal nudity, marijuana was allowed (those dutch party animals) etc.
