Plus this whole holiday thing really got pushed when Christmas, Hanukkah, and Eid were around the same time. Wasn't that about 4-5 years ago? So businesses were strongly urged to recognize all three religions and their celebrations.
Dont know about where you live in the world but here in yankee land, people avoid calling Christmas vacation/party/tree by its original name. The word Christmas has been replaced by the word Holiday.
It really irritates me to be honest. My thing is this that if we steal their religious day and start replacing all the affiliates of it with the word Holiday, would we like it if tomorrow they come after us and say that stop calling Eid, Eid .. and start calling it something Holiday too.
If you dont like the word Christmas, stay away from it, but dont change it please.
I actually agree with this too.
just out of curiosity ..do Pakistani families in the US celebrate christmas and have christmas dinners ?
We know a few people who do trees...I think its just a tribute to Christmas because they grew up with it. Plus people generally love this time of the year so they get into it.
As far as celebrating...there is a family dinner. Its an excuse to do what we do best...which is eat. We go shopping, go downtown to see the tree, drive around to see the lights/displays (this is more for the kids now) and when we were younger Macy's (back when it was Marshall Field's) did a really pretty story book display in their downtown location. Their entire building lined with these huge windows and they told a fairy tale in those windows...like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc.
I am sorry to say but Hanukkah is just riding on the popularity of Christmas. They just wanted to tag along. There was no Hanukkah party/sale till like only a decade ago. General population did not even know it till Adam Sadnlers sang his song in Saturday Night
The imaginary War on Christmas is something Fox News has been propagating. There is no such war. At work, people are still free to hang Merru Christmas signs in their office, greet each other if they choose to. But it is entirely appropriate that since Hanukah appears to be at the same time, no specifc religion be recongnized in office parties or government buildings.
Calling it a Holiday Party is inclusive, as opposed to naming the Holiday season after just one religion.
they both have lights, tree/bush etc. i guess its simpler to just have a holiday tree that is lit instead of an xmas tree, a hanukka tree, a menorah and what not.
